Dear all,

Is it possible for a HEPaladin
to learn a low level spell like
magic missile (maybe wearing a
ring of fire ??) ?
Thanks !
A.O.

It is indeed possible for a non-magic starting class to learn magic,
but it can be a difficult proposition. First, you need at least one
level in spellcasting to learn and cast spells. You can gain
spellcasting experience by reading scrolls while you have XP points in
your pool.
Concerning ring of fire, the ring of fire has three effects. It gives
you one level of fire resistance and ice vulnerability, and it helps
with casting fire magic. Magic dart is pure conjurations. I'd suggest
learning throw flame, if you can.
One last point. As a paladin, TSO will eventually give you an
invocation which allows you to fling huge holy blasts of flame. If you
hang in there long enough, you'll gain a massively useful ranged
ability that will absolutely annihilate demons and undead. It may be
best to simply focus on weapon skills for now.
But, as always, you can do whatever you want in crawl. It's your game,
and the only judge of your choices is the RNG.

(snip)

One more thing: spellcasting and heavy armour do not mix[1]. If your
paladin is wearing robes, then by all means learn a few low-level
spells. If he's in plate mail, them don't even think about it.

[1] Yes, yes, I know, you can get heavy-armour-wearing reaver-types going,
but not as a beginner you can't, and it's rarely worth the bother.
