Hello there.

Can't say that unarmed combat is weak, as
long as it is possible to ascend with unarmed
combat character.
But it's definitely bland.

What if character that reaches 10 and 20 levels
of unarmed combat gains some martial arts ability?
Like jump kick. Disarming.
Probably some kind of swapping
(you swap position with next
attacking monster if it misses).
Vital point strike.
Probably some stances.

Hmmm - I think you could make a case that an advanced martial arts
fighter should get extra evades.

I'm currently playing a UC troll, and his arsenal of unarmed attacks is
considerable. Cleaned out orc and lair so far, a couple of portals, a
couple of vault like structures with seriously ood monsters, and brought
him back to DL 13. (have to get him to use summonses and a great mace to
kill hydras though - with his slashing UC attacks he makes them grow
more and more heads in very short order).

No more bland than some axe wielding MD or other melee fighters. Au
contraire.

I ascended with UC troll. No need to tell me about UC.
Weapon wielding characters can at least change
weapon, depending on situation.
Fire brand against hydras, and ice monsters,
ice against fire monsters, distortion if
you don't really want to fight them.
There are numerous enchantments for weapons.
And only one for UC.

With UC all your options are outside UC.
There is totally and absolutely no veriety in UC.
You can complement UC with spells, and god's powers.
That's what I've done.
But I'm not sure if I want to try another UC char.

Mortial art abilities can spice it up :)

If you want non-bland unarmed, then play a Transmuter.

It is unlikely that unarmed combat will be made more sophisticated.
Some players may like a simplified combat without weapon switching.
Unarmed combat is quick and damaging enough even without claws of
troll or ghoul. It is good when a game provides different play styles,
some simple like Troll Monk of Okawaru and other complex like
Demonspawn Warper of Nemelex.

There was a really interesting 7DRL -- I forgot the name -- in which
combat specials were accessed by moving into the right positions.
There was one where you had to circle around a monster; another where
you could push a monster back if you backed yourself against a wall...
Intriguing stuff.
