After doing a couple searched on google I was surprised to find no
roguelikes based on Super Mario Bros.

If there is, I can't find it.

So, I'm going to make a simple descend into the dungeon, rescue the
princess type Roguelike based on Super Mario Bros. 1.

I'm using GM:HTML5, simple 16x16 tiles.

It will feature classic items and enemies from SMB1. It will be based
on the classic castle/dungeon levels in SMB1 but there might be
underwater dungeons too.

Mario will attack by jumping (i.e. attempting to move to adjacent tile
of enemy) or fireball utilizing a throw/cast type mechanic.

Here's a quick mockup. I'm currently working on tiles right now,
should finish tonight then I'll start working on the meat and
potatoes, levels & movement tomorrow.

I'm really excited about this, your right we've always been lacking a Mario RL.

I saw this posted at the GMC forums -- welcome, by the way. I'm working on an entry with GM myself.

The Mario universe seems like pretty rich fodder for a roguelike. Looking forward to seeing how you get on with the concept and with GM in general.
