A few years ago, as a beginning programmer I started on a RL in QBASIC
but it was extremely rudimentary. IMO it's nearly impossible to
implement efficient algorithms (especially LOS) for interpretive
QBASIC. After learning newer and better things (C++) in high school
computer science I & II, I don't really see the point of messing with
QBASIC any more.
Try QB 7.1. One of the main sticking points for anti-QBers is the lack
of memory available to QBasic, 7.1 fixes this. With $DYNAMIC arrays
the array space is almost unlimited. It also includes an extremely
efficient compiler.
It does have poor GFX capabilities, but since you are programming an
RL, you probably won't have too many problems.

I've been programming an RL in QB (on and off) for a while.
All of the source is located at the site I mentioned above.
It has random dungeons, an angband like txt parser, simple LOS and
probably a few other things I can't think of right now.

Where is QB 7.1? I only have the version that comes with Windows 3.1
and 95, and it has a variable space limited of 160 kb. I once tried to
program an Afrikan Nation simulation game in it, but ran out of
variable space on an 8 MB computer.
Where can I get this bigger and better 7.1 version?
