ToME 4 is so different from Angband, variants including ToME 2, that I
do not consider ToME 4 a variant--not even roguelike: because it has no
console mode. Perhaps it has a bit of Angband code (they are both
GPLed,) but it is so different I would not be surprised if it has none.
Source is available, so I will see.
In fact, the
roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org wiki states 'ToME *was*
an Angband variant.'
If one plays most Angband variants from more than the last decade, or
even what they came from, Moria, and Rogue, one will feel they are able
to play similar games, and with Moria-based ones will usually find a
similarity in the Tolkien-based setting, and similarity in the code. I
think this is not the case with ToME 4. It is more like Ragnarok, etc.,
than Angband.
I still play Rogue, Hack, Moria, Larn, Nethack, Omega, Angband, Ultra
Larn, Crawl, Zangband, ToME 2, Slash'em, variants, many other
roguelikes, but not ToME 4. There are some nice things about it, and I
am sure commercial games players might like it, but for many reasons it
is too different for me and I just do not enjoy it.
If rec.games.roguelike.angband was still very active, I would push for
the creation of rec.games.tome, rec.games.roguelike.tome, or an alt
newsgroup. I still think it would be a good idea.
