I think Vampires start the game with a stack of Scrolls of Darkness. Use
them to create a pocket of darkness during the day and wait it out if
you get caught outside. Except from that, the best you can do is get
light resistance from an item.

It's been a while since I played Z, but I *think* that WoR will only
recall you to the dungeon that's in the town you're currently in. The
same goes for wilderness dungeons - you have to be fairly close to
the surface entrance for WoR to work.
sherm--
WoR only works in towns with stairs, and you have to have visited the
dungeon via stairs first (this also applies to wilderness dungeons).
You can check whether a town has stairs by
- walking around the town
- looking around with the "L" command
- pressing "M" for the overland map, and then "*" to see whether that
town has stairs (and what shops it has as well)
- first checking the lower right corner of the screen for the name
of the town you're currently in, and then using the "various
information" menu: first press "~" or "|", and then "h". You can
scroll through the known towns and see which ones have stairs in them.
Note that the last three do not take any time, which might matter for a
vampire.
In the wilderness, check if the text "Dungeon" is displayed in the
corner; if it is, you're counted as being near the dungeon entrance,
and you can use WoR. Also note that as soon as you've visited the
dungeon, the guardians on top of it disappear, so controlled teleport
is a huge advantage, and phase scrolls and speed potions can make life
a lot easier.
Otto Martin - man, it's been a while...
