I'm sure this is a popular one, but I can't find any help in the FAQ or on
the websites I checked...

I'm new to Angband and like the bit that I've tried...but...is there an
actual manual for the game of any sort? Anything that might, say, tell
me how to equip things, how to tell what monsters are, how to interpret
the paranthetical numbers in equipment names, etc. I can't find anything
that tells how to cast spells, shoot arrows, any of that stuff. Is there
such a document, or is a true Angbander just supposed to tough through it
and figure it out by trial and error?

Many thanks,

Erik

Actually yes, there is a manual. So, you ask how to view the manual? Well,
that's explained in the manual. Where else would it be ;-)
Actually, all you need to do is hit the '?' key (make sure you hold down shift
when you press it.) The most important section is the list of commands, but
you should at least browse them all.

Well if your a munchkin you can read the help files. But the real
Angbanders like to play while blind.
Honestlyjust begin the game and press the "?" no qoutes. follow the menu
after that.
