Three months ago I discovered TomeNET and I've been playing for about
eight to twelve hours a day or every chance I get. Wow this game is
so much fun! I've played rouge-likes for years but I like it much more
than Moria or Angband. Here's just some of what the game offers:

* Free.
* Game is being actively developed and updated.
* Friendly online community.
* Fantastic depth of play
* Fast paced.
* Multiplayer online!
* Has a nice Tolkien feel to it
* Great and huge RPG engine that has been evolving for years!
* Huge assortment of monsters, items, dungeon vaults, spells, etc
* Huge world to explore with Dungeons/Towns/wilderness/etc..
* Different kinds of dungeons that are rendered quite differently
* Doesn't require an expensive computer to say the least
* Several classes and races to play so it offers great variety
* Takes months to master yet you can enjoy it the first day.
* You can improve the game yourself (open source!)
* Run your own TomeNET server if you like
* State of the art graphics. Well okay maybe not
* You can play for two minutes or ten hours at a time
* Great guide (manual/documentation) to the game and it shows how big
the game is

Join the fun and play TomeNET today! The client is only a 1.2MB
download!

You can also download the client and guide from C.Blue's site. He is
developing the game at present(Aug 2004):

Give it a try!

Additional notes:

Read the guide! There is a quick start section, too. Be ready to die
more often at first. Each time you die try to learn your mistake(s).
I've learned that key binds are absolutely essential to staying alive.
I use the plus key (numeric keypad) for teleport scroll, period (num
keypad) for healing pots, and the minus key (num keypad) as my bow
firing key. Having the healing key right at my fingertips for needing
that instant healing potion makes the difference between life & death
sometimes.

Btw, sorry for the off topic post. I've not played vanilla Angband in
three or four years so that is what I'm comparing TomeNET to. Maybe
it's much improved since then.

Vanilla Angband isn't supposed to be fancynice. If you want an appropriate
comparison, try ToME itself; it's parent, ZAngband; or Hengband, another
Z-variant.

MAngband (http://www.mangband.net ) is the multiplayer Angband variant, but
it's a bit stale at the moment because of a semi-recent conflict over who the
legitimate maintainer was.

And incidentally, TomeNET isn't off-topic here any more than MAngband is, and
many of us were already aware of it's existance.

I knew of TomeNET but after reading this post gave it a try. Agree very
much with the poster about the reasons. That which has surprised me most
was the community, very friendly and knowledgeable!
I started first without reading the guide, not a good idea, it is quite
different from the single player. Interestingly enough the others
players did *not* flame me then i came with my stupid questions which
are very well documented in the guide. It is a *very* nice community of
players that plays this game :))

Could not agree more :)

In 2101, war was beginning and we got signal. In
rec.games.roguelike.angband, H <H@i.a> set up us this post:

The only thing putting me off now is that it's reportedly unplayable
without resorting to the hideous beasts known as macros and the awful,
awful user interface *bands supply for editing them. Horrible seizures,
terrible brain tumours, violent nosebleeds, and hair loss are all things
I'd rather not experience while still in my twenties, thank you very much.
