I figured since the NG is so slow, I mine as well contribute something, even
if it's marginal at best.

Now I'm still new to ADOM, and try to avoid most spoilers, so keep that in
mind. It's no so much a stupid death as an ignorant one.

So my Beastfighter is cleaning the clock of anything that comes near in any
dungeon he's entered. We're talking one punch, George Foreman style
knockouts. It's brutal. The guy barely has any armor on, and he's still
taking any hits with one maybe two points of damage on him.

I make it all the way to the arena level with no problems what so ever. I'm
a little weary of giving it a go, since I've never entered the thing and
don't know what I'm up against. But I figure what the hell, it's probably
here for a reason, right?

First fight, no problem. Second fight, same thing. So I'm getting cocky.
And, of course, that's the beginning of the end. The fights continue, and
I'm rolling in the dough I'm getting showered with. I'm expecting Don King
to come around anytime and offer to be my promoter for a cut of my winnings.

One more fight to go, and I pause. What could I be pitted against for the
final round? But I laugh it off. My opponents up to now have been a joke.
Why should the last round be anything more than a little bit interesting? So
I nod to the arena manager, and in I go. Root around and find Li-Han-Kay.

You probably know where it goes from here.

I see him, and take a step towards. Get hit by a frost spell that takes a
little chunk of my health. Not bad, but at least a bit better than I've been
up against. No problem at all. I smile, and take another step forward.

*POOF*

Roght-ro, Shaggy! Invisible. Ok, don't panic. I can still take him. I take
another step forward and expect the cold blast. But don't get it. I know
what that means. He moved. If he's like any other mob I've encountered, he's
a step closer to me now, and right next to me. Easier for me, right? I bump
into where he should be... and step forward. He wasn't there. Now I know
it's on.

Get another frost blast in my back from somewhere, and start staggering
around trying to find him. He's blasting and dodging, dodging and blasting.
I'm starting to panic. I can only vaguely see where the blasts are coming
from because the animation is too fast. Finally, I get a hold of him and get
a few hits in. He's moderately wounded, and I'm about half health. No
problem... most of my damage was from trying to find him. A few more hits
and he's down for good. I swing... and step forward. And get blasted in the
back again. Now I'm REALLY panicking.

Things are starting to get serious, and after a couple of more staggers
around, I'm low enough on health to pray for it. That will get me a second
round with this S.O.B. So I pray, and nothing happens. I flash back to a
very early encounter I had. I needed to pray for health very early in the
game to get through my one tough spot before I bulked up and had forgotten.

So now I'm desperate. Still new to ADOM, I figure it's time to roll the
dice. I break out my two wands. The first one makes a creaking noise when
aimed. I yell at it and toss it back into the pack. The second one makes a
small little monster. One round later, the monster is a catsup stain on the
floor. Meanwhile, no blasts from You-know-who. He must be doubled up with
laughing at me, too preoccupied to cast.

I start quaffing potions (haven't IDed any successfully at this point, so
it's all russian roulette with a timer now), and Li gets back into the act.
3 potions that do nothing, and I'm down to pretty much one or two potions
before I'm dead from freezing. Quaff one, and...

*POOF*

Invisible. I actually did the triumphant, two fists raised in the air pose
at home. It's on now! Take that, you invisible bastard! How does the terror
feel?! I feel like the freaking Batman. I take a side step off the spot in
case Li will target where I was, and nothing hits me. So I figure I'm as
safe as can be.

I take one step towards his last known position to continue pounding on him
(when I find him), and...

*ZAP*

In case you didn't know, and I didn't, Li-Han-Kay can see invisible. Or at
least aim very well. But my poor little Beastfighter never found out,
because his brain froze before he could process the thought. He probably
still even has the triumphant smile frozen eternally to his invisible face.

But he's dead.

So I look up the spoilers for this jerk. Out of the four possible opponents,
he's the only badass. The only one my guy can't stand toe-to-toe with. Turns
out Li-Han-Kay is the Muhammad Ali of the arena.

And I was Rope-A-Doped to death.

Very nice story, and I guess you already learned the important lesson.

25% is plenty reason to make sure you are prepared for the worst.

Hah, great story. However you should beware in future since ogre magi
can appear in normal dungeon levels, and many of them are just as
tough as Li-Hon-Kay. It helps to have an ided inventory so you know
what can be of use to you (like rings of cold resistance or see
invisible) and an escape option like a wand of teleport can often
prove vital.

Still, hopefully you've learned a few things and had fun in the
process. Better luck next time :)

A little thing you should know about invisibility in Adom... if you
hit an invisible monster, then it can see you after that point.

This makes invisibility a little less useful than it may otherwise
have been...

But yes, next time prepare for Li-Han-Kay before meeting him. Cold
resistance and see invisible are probably good ideas.
