For a moment, I thought you had confused monks and beastfighters, but
after seeing what items you mentioned, I think I get it now.
If I'm not mistaken, the only thing that will interfere with the
Beastfighter's natural unarmed combat damage is occupying your hands. In
other words, no weapons, no shields. Everything else should be okay.
Hope that helps--a beastfighter was my first win, by the way. It is kind
of a load off to not have to worry about upgrading your weapon, that's for
sure. :)

Beastfighters become amazingly powerful after level 8 or so. Each
level they advance, their unarmed combat damage (claws) increases to
the point where it's on par with most good artifacts.
Tips though ...
-- Make sure you're always wearing the best armor you can find.
-- Use your spit attack to take out nasty foe from afar. Similarly,
use thrown rocks, or bows whenever you can, as you'll come to rely on
your missiles for survival.
-- Drakelings make particularly good beastfighters due to their
skillset.
As always, don't be 'fraid to flee. For the first 8-10 levels,
things will always be a bit dicey, then all of a sudden, you're a
walking cuisanart.

Isn't that obvious? :P Make sure to try and keep your HP above zero too,
while you're at it. ;)

They didn't say anything about being a drakeling...beastfighters don't
have that ability.

Well, that class was my first win, and that was years ago, before I
restarted playing. Back then, I considered missile weapons to be not worth
it except for archers, so needless to say, I got my first win without
relying on missiles for survival. :P

Now I see how the spit thing got into your head--please mention this first
next time, lol. :P
I found Beastfighter being the easiest class to keep alive in early
game due to their skillset and poison resistance when lvl 6.
Beastfighters do not suffer from being burdened or wearing heavy
armour like Monks. They do get penalties when using weapons, unlike
Monks. Armour-wise, beastfighter can wear anything. For Monk, elven
chain mail is about only best apart from artifact robes etc. Monk
cannot even wear Ancient Mummy Wrapping without losing DV bonus.
In the early game, try training a ranged attack, it will come in handy with
those karmics later on ...
oh, and play a troll or a drakeling, it is much easier
ivo
Troll? The slowest race at leveling by a mile, for a class that gets
stronger the higher level they grow to? That sounds like a pretty bad
idea, got to say. Sure, you'll be pretty hard to kill (except by
starvation) in the early-game, but so is any troll.
If you play cautiously (as all ADOM players should :P), gnomes or
hurthlings are good race choices, since they level up the fastest (gnomes
10% faster than the base rate, hurthlings 5%)).

my bad, you're right

but still, drakish beastfighters are pretty powerfull combination
Just to make a point - started a gnomish beastfighter.
Went directly to SMC. Killed some, level 2, found downstairs.
UD:1 - Killed a lot, took down a werewolf when still quite young.
Gained level 7 before hitting UD:2
Finished rest of UD with what I would call not very good item luck -
only found metal cap +1PV and thick furs +2 PV. Still, no close calls,
killed everything in my way. Exited dungeon at level 10, barehand
damage is now 1d10 + 13 with +37 to hit. So no need to play even gnome
beastfighter carefully, they just kick (or hit) a$$.
With a bit more normal luck there would have been herbs there, usually
is in the UD, which really will boost any char. Poison resistance,
swimming, healing and herbalism is just very useful for a quick &
reckless playing style.
You seem to be enjoying yourself. Hope things continue to go well. :)
