First place I went after killing a beggar was the SMC "you feel a
surge of power" ironfist guantlets. that was a nice start. Robes of
resistance as a random drop before dwarftown.

I haven't won yet. Came back to adom after like five years of pause.
Needed time to recover after save scumming ruined the game for me. Best
character to date L40 char who confused elemental anomaly with an
chaotic altar and got sacrificed.

IIRC stat increases translate into points so that is certainly worth
more than unused scrolls in backpack.

Congratulations on your win. Maybe I should start playing again to get
my first win as well... So far I had two archers and a wizard dying on
the final level (because of corruption, Fisty and some uber-monster).

This is really weird. Maybe it is just me, but I tend to find it in
three out of four games. And almost every time my character reaches
level 40.
