Those Vs, of course, are the horde of acid vortices I was bitching about.
With my relatively freshly acquired TC from a blink dog, I was fiddling
around all over the map. I visited the mystic, certainly. I took down Griff
and 'Nak, then Rehetep. I was contemplating what I could do next, and
figured I'd try the NDC to see if I could handle it; I couldn't. So I
figured I'd go back down the CoC and try teleporting into a room on the side
of D:13 I hadn't gotten at. First, I tried the DH again, but the steel
zombie I mentioned in the thread "Talk about acid reflux" was a little hot
to handle. Impasse city.
Next plan, try teleporting into the room beyond the door (if you look at the
map, you'll see the room the upstairs is in has a tunnel at the east (dug)
and the west, barred by doors). Everytime I tried to teleport into the damn
room, it was "Impossible." I tried four times. The fourth time, well, I got
teleported into the middle of the horde and, well, tada.

Personally I'd choose the ring of damage and mental stability
over the searching and stun resistance any day. Were they not
identified?
Not that this would have help you here of course, but just in
general, you know.
To be honest, it never occured to me. I don't usually wear it (though I also
usually have better armour), and though I carry it around "just in case", it
never leaves the pack. Force of habit, I guess.
Well, just to throw a justification your way, with female grey elves I do
actually value having a very high Ap. (I'm not saying that's a good excuse.)

Well, at the time I put the latter rings on, I didn't have the former. Well,
I didn't have the RoD. The only one of those rings I considered putting on
later was the RotF. Again, habitual.

Here's a counterargument for you: picture a highly beautiful woman
dressed in the sort of rotten, patchy rags one could presume the mummy
wrapping to be. Can you honestly tell me that she looks *worse* that way
than she would in armor? <grin>

The Wanderer
A government exists to serve its citizens, not to control them.
And remember you can always take off the mummy wrapping when doing things
which check appearance... a relatively short list, probably just
getting and ordering companions around, and selling/buying in shops.
As a bard, you shouldn't have had any problems ordering your companions
(I don't see that you even had any, actually, from your screen shot) to
do anything... even with low appearance.
And, actually, having a stat lowered is a great way to train it, especially
with such a nonessential one as appearance.
Danielle
Well, like I said, it was force of habit more than anything; I probably
would have worn it if it had occured to me to wear it. (And those mirror
rooms still wouldn't have been a problem.)
Besides, isn't the ordering around of companions entirely dependent on
charisma?
> As a bard, you shouldn't have had any problems ordering your companions

Well, I decided that, with my 7LB on, companions would just be a pain in the
ass. I had a tame black bear waiting around on D:1. With my bards, I usually
just use companions as situational assistants. If we're talking about cats
and jackals, I'll tame them just send them off on a kamikaze mission.
> And, actually, having a stat lowered is a great way to train it,
especially
> with such a nonessential one as appearance.
I like to keep it high, just for the mirror rooms. I get more Ch and I
preserve my Pe (both also important). But then, if I wore the wrapping it
still would have been high enough. But *then*, I mentioned that above.
Apologies.

While the woman currently wearing the linen wrappings is quite beautiful,
you can tell by looking that Rehetep was obviously attached to them--the
shreds of rotting meat where the flesh of the former owner scabbed over
onto his grave wrappings make that quite clear. Her luminous skin is
revealed in tantalizing glimpses, contrasting sharply with the scabrous
decay of the rags as they rub over her body, depositing streaks of
powdering mould. The enticing glow of her skin is significantly reduced
by the way it mixes with the grime of her clothes, resulting in streaks
and dapples of a vile slime that lets the vermin in the ancient mummy
wrapping nest comfortably on her skin without ever quite concealing them
from your increasingly nauseated gaze...
Myself, I'll contemplate either fancy clothes or leather armour.

Really, I couldn't have written this better (or worse) myself. Very graphic
and descriptive. You're sicker than me (quite a feat).

I find a carefully administered dose of Luis Royo is a pretty handy
antidote to this sort of reaction. :)

...wow. I think I'm flattered.
I credit it all to formative years spent in England and the blessed
influence of Tales From the Crypt (no, not the TV show). Graham Ingles,
what a guy...

Not trying to patronise you or anything, God knows I haul around way too
many unreflected habits myself, but don't you agree that it's exactly
those habits which inhibit our skill advancement as ADoM players, and
that we could reach a higher level of proficiency if we allowed
ourselves to use the resources at hand more open-mindedly?
Just my thoughts, and I'm sure they apply to myself way more than they
apply to you, so please don't be offended.
To illustrate what I mean, I have dug out an old post by the ingenious
Petri Sihvola about one tactic he devised. I was struck in awe by the
lucid beauty and pure genius of it, and I could NEVER have figured out
anything like it myself.
*sigh* I guess that's the difference between the shining demi-gods and
us mere mortals.
Here's the link. Note that it leads to a VERY spoily piece of
information, of course.

I'm not offended, not at all. I'm not the kind to take offence from
constructive criticism, and if I was, it would probably be hypocritical :).
If anything, I'm glad you indicated this. Next game, I'll certainly try to
shake my old habits and try something new. After all, I've been playing ADOM
for a year and a half, and the furthest I've ever gotten was past the first
four temples. And that was playing a gnomish elementalist... with a greater
titan companion who basically did all the major killing (though I regret not
getting the experience points from the SfB and the ACW). In fact, that was
the only game I had ever managed to challenge the Tower.

Wow.
That's certainly an inventive mind at work. Damn, that's good.
You're right, Ratatoskr, that's the kind of stuff that we've gotta be doing:
finding new and creative ways to get ahead.
Still looking for a YAFVP after 18 months,

> ... and if I was, it would probably be hypocritical :).
I'm sorry, that should be "and if I were". Bloody subjunctive.
I apologize for any semantic misconceptions this error may have caused.
That is all. Thank you for your time.
Well, if you've gotten that far, it's only a matter of time until you go
all the way. I expect to read YAVP from you very soon.
BTW, what chars are you playing nowadays? Ever tried those Candle-born
dwarven barbarians I usually recommend? Those are chars that are more
likely to forgive minor playing mistakes than other
Race/Class/BS-combos. And if he/she happens to get crowned with
Vanquisher, all those baddies are in for a ride.

That's exactly why I HATE companions of any sort. I want to get all the
glory for myself, dammit! That's no dogma for me, mind you, I will use
the occasional SoFS at the right moment, but haul those suckers around
everywhere I go, letting them fatten up on experience I could very well
use myself, only to get killed by them as early as they decide to get a
temper tantrum? No, thanks.
How did above mentioned character of yours die, anyway?

And that's just one example out of many. It really pays off to google
for posts by this guy. If he had merchandise available, I'd buy some of
it. And no, I'm not the adoring type.
Imagine a McFarlane Action Figure of Petri Sihvola whacking the ACW into
oblivion with dual-wielded scrolls of peace. Hell, I'd be first in line
at my local retailer the day it hits the market.

Good luck, then. Nothing beats that feeling. You won't have to look much
longer. Promise.
BS meaning BirthSign here, obviously. Just in case there was any confusion.
And please accept the standard apology for replying to myself.
Now there's a post Midge Ure should be required to read...
I'm not much into the flat-out melee types myself. I find them kind of
boring. And the game is, of course, about having fun.
At my skill level, I still prefer straight spellcasters (wizards and
elementalists). I also enjoy playing bards quite a bit. I used to love
playing drakeling rangers, with the two swords and scurgari; then I realized
I wasn't getting anywhere without undue effort. When I'm in the mood for
melee, I go with weaponsmiths (not dwarf, though) or even healers. Assassins
can be fun too, with the fantastic weapon skills they start with. I tend to
stick to grey elves for most purposes nowadays.

I got the SoFS from Thrundy, so I went down to the DH and read it, as I
usually do (I won't in my next game). I was actually lucky to have him
around when I ran into a horde of white unicorns around CoC 40, though. In
that game I also picked up Hawk (first and only time), but I'll think twice
next time.
I'm not a big fan of companions, not only because they steal xp but they're
also slow, but I'm a really clumsy player and I like having them around as
assurance, you know.
> How did above mentioned character of yours die, anyway?
Back in January I had a whole series of threads going on Reella and her
escapades, since I was experiencing all kinds of things I'd never
experienced. The older posts about her are somewhat marred by the fact that
I was doing a half-assed job of attributing my responses properly, but I'm
sure you could look past that if you looked her up. (You could also look up
my apology to the group, just to see I tried to make amends in the stupidest
way I could.)
The YASD thread is
http://groups.google.ca/groups?q=Reella&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=20030126204645.04943.00000241%40mb-cn.aol.com&rnum=1.
It didn't generate much interest in the group; I suppose my constant
questions and comments about her game just pissed everyone off.

I'm sure that would generate quite a stir in the toy world. The "Petri
Sihvola figurine of wondrous power".

Oh, well now I'm probably jinxed.
But I don't play as often anymore. In Windows XP it's something of a pain.
And with university studies and a crappy roommate, I've gotta actually try
to do some work this year. No more coasting through high school, getting
high on roguelikes and developing conspiracy theories in the shadow of an
existentialist hatred of everything.
But I guess the victory could come some time soon. In theory. Thank you for
the encouragement. Indeed, it's nice to experience the sensation one feels
when another is empathetic (at least I assume this is the sensation).

WHAT? Since when is saving the world supposed to be fun?! You should
definitely reevaluate your attitude there, mister. ;)

Ever considered Archers? I find them fun to play and tend to get far
with them. Plus, with the concentration skill, they make decent
spellcasters too.

Ah, the pleasures of youth...

You're welcome :)
Hey, I'm a philosopher at heart. There's no way I'm gonna try and save the
world if I can't get something out of the experience.

I've tried archers. They're all right. My habits lead me to try and conserve
my ammo though. Since I'm trying to change my habits, I oughta give them
more of a chance.
Besides, I'm more drawn to the concept of a sexy grey elf throwing cones of
ice out of her hands. It's the way I'd like my life to be. (I don't think
that's disturbing.)

Woah, you're a tad defensive. I was just being a bastard, no need to panic.
I should be panicking. When a hurricane makes it all the way up to Ottawa,
you know it's got gusto. (But then, looking out the window, it's not that
bad. It's just that this residence building is so crappy you just get the
feeling it'll topple over and crush the architecture building.)

Ohh, my, those were good times. Just looking back at my yearbooks, and all
the mockery and death threats written by my friends, well, it's just
touching.
But the best part of my youth was growing my chin hair into the greatest
goatee conceivable. I became an intramural high school icon. (Well the
goatee became an icon; I was just detested. Especially after my failed
attempt to initiate a school club, the Society of Free Thinkers (SoFT).)

That's not quite the pity I was expecting. Maybe something more along the
lines of "OMG dats so baaaad!!!" would have been appropriate. (I have to
stop making fun of teeny-boppers; it's just so damned easy.)

Nah, that would be Gottfried Herold. A 3000 HP, 11K MP wizard doesn't
have too much to worry about.

... Holy <explicate>...
The thing that is especially sad about his page is the fact that "rachie" is
a few years past the teeny-bopper phase. She's out of high school, for
shit's sake. She's older that me. It stands as a testament to the gross
commercialization of youth culture today. This, of course, results in a
massive brain-rot that renders imagination and individuality non-factors in
human development. To me, that is the crime of all crimes. (But then, you
probably all know that by now.)
When I get my website complete, this will be exactly the sort of thing I
deplore. (I was originally inspired to create Curry Bucket's Controversial
Web Presence by a site I stumbled upon by punching my name into the Address
line (www.josh.com). What I found (at the time) was Josh's Non-Controversial
Web Site, which was essentially a crusty photo album. Unfortunately, the
site seems to be down right now. Big loss to the world.)
Thank you for the link, matija (how you found it, I dunno). It exemplifies
the toilet that our society is swirling in.

I meant Petri, from David Chapman's reference to him:
