A poem that shall wonder and amaze even a gnome
Ah yes this poem will be gracious and true
A poem so great as to make even the Mad Minstrel blue
But I do not know why I write this except to save face
Those who do not put spoiler space are cast out in disgrace
Maybe I can't emphasize because I don't care weither spoily or not
When I look at a post my thoughts don't go into fraught
There is no conflict inside about whether to read
I just read the spoilers without worrying about the corruptor's heed
I care not of the fun I may lose by reading the spoilers
I feel that if I had not read so many my characters would more often die in the
broilers
And so this spoily space poem comes to an end
Not because the story of the spoily space is over
But because I'm tired of writing this poem.
And the top five artifacts, IMHO are:
1. dwarven pick axe "Hammerhead"
This is by far the best artifact in the entire game. The ability to have an
item that can dig through anything without rusting or breaking is quite
powerful. This artifact is incredibly useful for the chaos orb temples and for
mining for crystals(especially crystals of knowledge). Oh yead and it's a
decent weapon too.
2. The si
This is the artifact that keeps on giving. Using it you can gain a near
infinite amount of money and a near infinite amount of piety due its
multiplying affect. All helpful when you want to gain even more artifacts
3. bracers of war
With most other artifacts you have to make choices. You have to decide with
artifact to wear or wield in a specific inventory slot. Not so with the
bracers of war because they are the only artifact bracers in the game and
surpass the abilities of any non-artifact bracers you can think of. The
ability to regenerate wounds and the ability to inflict more critical hits is a
great boon to any character.
4. platinum girdle "True strength"
This is the only artifact girdle in the game. And is on this list for much the
same reason as the bracers of war. It also increases your willpower by +15 and
causes your wounds to regenerate not small benefits by any means.
5. Trident of the Red Rooster
This was the hardest in this list to decide upon. Needle and Sting could go in
this spot but they are too artifacts rather than one. And, the Trident gives a
bonus of +24 to mana. The trident also is a great melee and missile weapon.
It's top notch.
It's not that great. I'd much rather have the ToTRR, or Executor, or
Protector, or the Bracers of War than this.

I'd put these either first or second.

It's also impossible to get.

My list would be:
1. Vanquisher
It slays almost everything.
2. The Bracers of War
For all the reasons listed above.
3. Needle+sting
Easy to get, easy to use, kill greater molochs in three hits.
4. ToTRR
Hard to get, so is one step behind the above.
5. Nature's Companion
+15 speed is extremely useful.

Hmm. you really think so?
I usually find enough wands of digging to get by without pickaxes...But then
I never dig outside the chaos temples either. Vanquisher deserves first
place because of sheer asskicking power :)

Great item, I agree.

I've got this item a few times and died of overconfidence a few levels
later. Probably means it deserves the place.

Hmm. For some reason I've never seen this one.

And you get it when, exactly? Isn't this the one near the end of an ultimate
ending?
Not exactly the kind of item that saves your butt in a game :)
I'd like to nominate the ancient mummy wrapping for this spot...I find
myself using this one every game I get it.

In practice, it is extremely difficult to get. It
is not impossible. It has been shown recently how
to get it. Nevertheless, it is not that great
(like the TotRR) because it is not available until
the very late game.

Graeme, I sent the details via email. It is not in
the GB yet because it is not yet fully understood
or tested.
This is totally useless for monks who get the kicking ability and becomes
useless for elementalists. And unless you get gemology and mining in your
race/class combo, the mining is basically useless too (unless you want to
smith up a phase dagger or two...)

Money's not a problem once you reach the casino; kind of useful for crowning
though.

My vote for #1. This is very useful for EVERY race/class. Only thing that
comes close is the RotMC.

Can anyone actually get this? It looks like a great artifact for
spellslingers....

Unless you're going for an ultra ending, the ToTRR is better-than-average at
best. Unless you're playing a mindcrafter, Ma is totally worthless this
late in the game (Heal or CCW mean near-infinite spell points). Immunities
are nice, but the RoI is more efficient (ring slots are usually less
valuable than the weapon slot IME). And the slays are OK, but nothing
exceptional. The physical damage is very good, but if you are evaluating
two-handed physical weapons, Vanquisher is easily the best.
My Top 5:
1. Bracers of War
2. Ring of the Master Cat. Huge Dx bonus helps with missiles (if they can't
hit ya, they can't hurt ya), effective +24 to speed (16 direct and 8 from
Dx), and find weakness for those classes without it....
3. Executor. Big damage from a (light) one-handed weapon, humanoid slaying,
several useful resistances and St. The best all-around melee weapon in the
game IMO. (Needle and Sting give huge damage, but you lose the huge DV from
shields).
4. Ring of Immunity. Good extra DV/PV and a full set of immunities for the
cheap cost of a ring slot.
5. This is a close one. Nature's Companion, Protector and Preserver all are
honorable mention, but because I like melee in most of the game, I pick the
emerald dagger. One of the most underrated artifacts, it has the criticals
of bloody orcish daggers with permanent poison (it's great fun to hit
something once and let it die on its own :)) AND humanoid slaying.

No way. It's useful, but it's only an unbreakable version of a tool that,
for many combos, doesn't often break anyway.
My list:
1. Si
2. Vanquisher
Vanquisher... mmm. But I put the Si above it because Si=crowning,
crowning=end of horrendous food consumption, end of horrendous food
consumption = much more enjoyable game.
3. Nature's Companion. Speed and fire immunity.
4. Ironfist. Very nice for spellcasters. If you don't need every single bit
of Str you can scrounge, less so.
5. Protector. Best shield in the game. Shields rock.
I would probably have the Bracers of War somewhere here, but I've yet to
receive it.
wands of digging and regular pick-axes do the trick.

and it's two-handed - i hate 2H weapons.
here's my top-5 list of best artifacts:
1. purifier - if i get it as a crowning gift, i've almost
won the game.
2. ring of the master cat - we all know why :)
3. sun's messenger - drop dead, emperor lich!
4. robes of resistance - i've had too many critical hits
that turned my EPM's into [-1, +2].
bonus hitpoints are great, too.
5. wyrmlance - i've grown fond of BDC scumming ;)

1. Vanquisher.
- I've only gotten it twice or thrice with a barbarian, but it's
divine. Although it decreases the DV tremendously, it's slaying
abilities are a boon. I remember killing a moloch in Arena with a L16
human barbarian. =) (Well, this thing makes playing perhaps too easy.)
2. Nature's friend
- Speed, two immunities are enough
3. Staff of the Archmage
- That Ma +10 is good for any mage (I often get this as a Crowning
gift) in early- and mid- and end-game. =)
4. Trusted one
- Talk about resistances! (Too bad this is so damned rare.)
5. Ring of Immunity
- God bless this Ring! Immunities to all elements makes killing
vortices so much fun. This ring as a pre-crowning gift at L8 = as good
as it gets!
I don't like the Si. I never use it, I pick it up and leave it
somewhere. Then if I make it to the endgame, I pick it up again and let
it duplicate for you-know-what-level-throwing. I have never gotten the
TotRR, so I can't comment on that - I have had wet dreams about it

Mine have to be:
1. Protector. +20/+4 is just *nice*, and since I always have at least one
shield...
2. Executor. It curses, but it's a good, one-handed demon-slayer. I like
it.
3. Iron Crown of Havlor. NICE dv/pv boost. No resists, but you can pick up
most resistances elsewhere. It's also headgear, and there's not a lot of
good headgear. There's also not a lot of resistance-granting headgear, so
yeah.
4. Purifier. I just like this one.
5. Presever. It's just all-around awesome.

*shudder*
Uh, get the hell away from me...
Since everyone else is doing it, why not? (she says before following
someone else who just jumped off a cliff). Mine would be:
1. The black tome of alsophocus
2. True aim
3. Thunderstroke
4. The phial of caladriel
5. The silver key
Thos 5 are just awesome, any one of them a game winner.
Taking a more pragmatical view my alternative list would be:
1. The chaos orb of elemental mana
2. The chaos orb of elemental earth
3. The chaos orb of elemental air
4. The chaos orb of elemental fire
5. The chaos orb of elemental water
My one winner to date, and the two other characters I got to D50 would
never have got that far without these. From looking at other people's
YAVPs it seems that this is the case for most people, so it seems that
nobody ever wins without getting them, even if they do lack the sheer
power of, eg, true aim.
And finally, my nominations for the 5 worst artifacts:
1. The bracers of war. They make you hungry faster and I've noticed I
tend to gain less weapon marks per creature I fight when wearing them.
Very sucky indeed.
2. The ring of the master cat. You kill a cat and it explodes? What gives
there? I thought artifacts were meant to be indistructable, but not this
piece of junk. Less experience per kill is nasty as well.
3. Executor. Where to start with this one? It's an axe, and axes are one
of the least effective weapon skills in the game. It curses. It makes you
more vulnerable to those bastard ratlings because you can become
overburdened if they disarm you. No thanks.
4. Vanquisher. Two handed weapons have to be good to be worth using
instead of having a shield and this just isn't. Lower damage than a
regular E2HS and a nasty DV penalty. Best avoided.
5. Protector. PV +4? Is that meant to be impressive? Even Rolf's
Oversized Paperweight does better than that. And just to rub in how truly
dire it is it gives sleep resistance, almost as a joke. I generally tend
to leave this on the floor where I find it.

Make that 21 points worse DV - 7 for the shield itself then a further 14

An ETS will allow you to learn the shield skill up to level 13, Nature's
Friend will only take you to level 6. That means that the DV difference
is actually (13*2+13)-(6*2+6)=21.

Comparing to Protector, it has 1/3 of the DV, which also means you can
only train your Shields skill up to level 6 with it. Bottom line: Nature's
Friend utterly and completely sucks.

... and so was my dear zapfdingbats devoured by chaos piranhas

Let's just say that *I* like it and you all can hate it, ok?

OK, here's my list:
1. Vanquisher
Because it slays everything, obviously.
2. Bracers of War
Death ray, confusion, critical hits and regeneration. Excellent.
3. Preserver
For free action and regeneration. Extra Wi is also top stuff.
4. Black tome of Alsophocus
Very, very good. Not for chaotics though unless they have plenty of
SoCRs and PoCCs. I hate to "waste" the white unicorn quest by doing it
after closing the gate since the corruption after D50 can be removed
by scumming the BDC anyway. I also hate to remove only five or so
corruptions when the unicorn can actually cure any amount. In this
situation, I just pick this book up from wherever I left it, read it
till I'm extremely corrupted and then get the quest reward. Net
result: lots of spells, zero corruption.
5. Iron Crown of Havlor
For the great DV and PV. The learning bonus is nice, but I prefer to
switch to the crown of science whenever I'm about to gain a level
(unless I can't remove it at will afterwards).

1., 2., 3. definitely deserve their place on the list, 5. is still okay, but why
that tome?
First of all, you can only do the unicorn quest at quite a high level, at which
you're usually scheduled for winning anyway (and could just as well afford to scum
for spellbooks, except if you're playing one of the few classes that are really bad
at learning spells). Then, scumming the BDC for removing corruption is not fun, as
it wastes a lot of (real-world) time.
Why not the ring of the master cat? Nature's companion? Ironfist?
Malte
I usually play one of those few classes. As I often manage to keep
corruption down even without the unicorn, I find it pointless to
remove only ~5 corruptions with it, when I can just read the tome till
I'm extremely corrupted and get away with it. The spells are immensely
useful without a question and can get you some lifesaving ones. It's
position on the list is debatable but I just had to include it!

They're great, admitted, but didn't fit in the top 5.

And remember - your opinions may vary.
Ok, let's go:
Nature's Companion - not very big DV/PV but two immunities and +15 speed. I like it. It is
indeed better than Perion's. But it possible to smith out EPM [+13, +26] {Dwarven paladin}
So, it's difficult choice, IMHO.
Then:
robes of resistance - corpse-obtainable resistances, +5 To, -4 to-hit for melee and
missiles. I couldn't say if it's good or no. Furhermore, I never found it. If I would do,
I'm not sure if I wore it (Grammar is ok?)
Shirt of Saints - not impressive for me.
Perion - sucks. I said sucks and punkt!
AMW - a lot of "plushka"'s ;) (valuable intrisincs). I always forget to wear it.
black tome - bejak! :(
SLB is better then all artifact boots .
Bracers of War - No comments. Number One indeed. Maybe Two ;) Surely not Three :)
Cloak of Oman - looks pretty well (Especially if you have TC) What a pity i never saw that
! :(
Brannalbin - not impressive. Resistances are corpse-obtainable, CoI can be enchanted with
scrolls upto [+7,+7] w/o problems.
elemental gauntlets - of course you can wear it when you get it, but you can fin something
better later (For example brass knukles [+7,+8], smithed with iron(?) by DE Assassin)
Ironfist - +7 St, the only source of stun res. Pretty good, but it DV/PV could be
better...
Shizostriker - usable for spellcasters only.
Platinum Girdle... Jesus Fuckin' Christ!!! How to obtain this???
Crown of Science - The Bad Thing (someone's TM). I mean, for dayly use. But if next
monster give you level up...
Crown of leadership - not too bad if it's your first precrowning gift. Of course, later
you can smith out eternium cap [+8,+9]... (I like to smith, did you see that? ;)
Ankh - nice.
Preserver - really good.
Aylas - impressive DV/PV.
RotHK - sucks, IMHO
RoImmunity - well, nice thing... What if it would protect your eq and inv from all types
of attacks except stealing?..
Ring of Master f - great!
Protector - great if you are using shield... kinda spellcasters, paladins...
Rolf's Saviour and Nature's-which-is-shield sucks. IMHO, again.
Vanquisher - ammmnnn... what slays actually do? Multiply damage? How much times?
Emerald dagger... once i get it from surge of power somwhere between si level and
Dwarftown, and i use it for a while. Then i (yes, of course!) smith my phase daggers for
OVER than (+15, 1d4+15) [+10,+0] and forget about emerald dagger...
Twins - quite ultimate weapons.
Hammerhead - if you have mining and gemology, it becomes infinite (dungeon) source of ore,
gems=$$$, crystals of knowledge+holy water=Le 99 + !oEx = all stats 99 :)
Staff of Archmagi - SC only. Fighter classes can use this only for balancing stats.
TotRR - YAUW - yet another ultimate weapon ;)
Si - quite annoing...
So, my top five looks like this:
1 Bracers of War
2 Ring of Master Cat
3 Your ultimate weapon (or shield) of choice. As for me - it's Twins. For you it can be
Vanquisher, Protector, Trusted One, or something else.
4 Preserver, Aylas or Ring of immunity. I'm not sure...
5 Something usefull, like Nature's Companion, Hammerhead, Far Slayer... You know, five is
not enough! :)
