I recently bought the software package NovaDisk (from NovaStor) to backup my
hard disk. NovaDisk contains another code called NovaBoot, which produces a
bootup disk so one can fully recover from backup media to a newly formatted
hard-disk drive. (I'm running a Pentium 133 with Windows 95.)
Without going into details, the NovaBoot portion did not work on my system.
NovaStor, after some trying some things, said my problem was rare, and was
due to an incompatibility between my hardware and/or bios settings with
DOS4GW.EXE, a memory extender of Watcom C++ which I assume NovaStor was
written in. NovaStor further cited they have had a few users with similar
problems, with most of them having Compaq computers (I'm running a Micron
Powerstation, however). They had no fix, but thought there'd be a small
chance putting something into their bootup config.sys file may solve the
problem, or tweaking with the bios settings. Otherwise, I'm out of luck
as they've not been able to help these people. Anyway, that's what they
told me.
Of course, I called Micron, and they said they have no knowledge of any of
their systems being incompatible with DOS4GW (I tend to believe them since
they've been fairly honest with me about other problems in the past). I
called TenBerry Inc., the successor to Rational Systems, but version 1.97 of
DOS4GW they don't even own anymore, having outright sold it to Watcom, I
was told. I called Watcom, but somehow I don't even expect their tech people
to reply to my inquiry after talking to their "guardian of the telephone".
Now I've actually tried to run DOS4GW.EXE 1.97 under the three different modes
of DOS one has available in Windows 95. In a DOS window, it seems to run
fine -- I get the banner and then the 1004 error message (running DOS4GW.EXE
on my 386 running DOS 6.22 gives the same banner/error message suggesting this
is normal). However, if I restart Windows 95 with an MS-DOS window, or I cold
boot up and during the Windows 95 startup hit the 'F8' key and then select
command line prompt, and then try running DOS4GW.EXE, it hangs up the computer
-- no message or banner is printed out -- I have to hit the reset button.
Thus, I'd like to know if I've been fed hooey, or if there are a few computers
that do have difficulty running DOS4GW.EXE version 1.97. If the latter, is
there a fix that can go into the config.sys file or resetting some of the bios
settings that would make it work, or is it due to unfixable incompatibilities
with my hardware? There is an update to DOS4GW.EXE (version 2.01 from
TenBerry, as well as a Professional version), but I have not been able to
locate a copy of either to try out. Would this work?
As an aside, I've been wondering why I could not get Quake (DOS version I
suppose) to run under a DOS bootup on my computer, and I was told Quake used
DOS4GW.EXE version 1.97. Maybe the problem is the same, thus my reason for
also posting this to relevant games newsgroups.
Thanks.

That's CWSDPMI.EXE, the free DPMI provider for DJGPP. DOS Quake was compiled
with DJGPP.

I had problems with DOS4G/W version 1.97 myself, and traced it to a
conflict with the mouse driver. I had never had any problems with the
many games that use v1.96. As soon as I changed drivers, presto.
Either try a newer mouse driver, or one from a different manufacturer.

Yup. Its there in the programming documentation, there are specific models.
I'm not sure if you have one of those models and I don't have the time now
to dig up the print out... if you need it please e-mail me
(Nemes...@rocketmail.com) and I'll send you the file off the CD.

I'm pretty sure Quake uses Causeway because there is a file in my Quake
directory called CSW or something that indicates it uses CauseWay. It
wouldn't surprise me if Quake did use CauseWay instead of DOS/4GW, for
CauseWay can handle VESA functions VERY well where in DOS/4GW it becomes a
mess (particulary for 2.0). CauseWay would rule dos extenders if the
kingdom of DOS was still intact.

Why does eveyone think that Quake was made with watcom?
It's made with DJGPP, the free 32 bit compiler from www.delorie.com.
CWSDPMI = Charles W Sandmann's DPMI server. Source code is freely
available.
