Hate to post an advertisement, but http://www.ebay.com will let you join
in on auctions for used software such as what you mentioned.
(In fact, I just won a CD which has Transport Tycoon, Railroad Tycoon,
Colonization, and Pirates Gold.) (Pirates is my favorite game on it.)
And back on topic: Can anyone explain it to me? Why is it that games
programmers get addicted to old games?
--
I think it's because anyone who is a professional game programmer had a
passion for games long before they did it for a career. It's nostalgic.
Probably the same reason car nuts like '57 Chevys and airplane nuts like the
Piper Cub. Both are outdated, less capable and uglier (IMHO) than what is
available today, but people are still passionate about them. It might also
have something to do with old games having more of an emphasis on game play
instead of graphics whereas now the opposite might be true. Old games are
fun.
Well, back to playing Star Blazer on my Apple II+ :-)
The same reason that people from the 50's like 50's music. It's what you
grow up with. That and many older games had crap for graphics (compared to
today), but they had incredible gameplay. Many will argue that graphics has
taken a front seat to gameplay in too many modern games. Sometimes playing
those old games is a reminder of how good gameplay can be without the visual
dazzle of 3D graphics.

Or maybe the haze of time makes true gems stands out against the tide of
crap that we were deluged in. I recently bought a CD containing a brilliant
ZX Spectrum emulator plus 1 thousand (yes, One thousand) Speccy games. It
was brilliant. All my old favourites were still brilliant but I couldn't
help notice that a good 800 or so games were awful. I remember some were
getting rave reviews when they came out.
But you are right in one aspect: good gameplay never dates while graphics
of today will look bland tomorrow. Let that be a lesson to all you games
developers.
Cheers,
Sid.
In the specific case of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, the Transport Tycoon
Semi-FAQ (in which I'm mentioned, through no fault of my own) at
<http://i-want-a-website.com/about-tt/> has (or had) a link to an
online store that has Transport Tycoon Deluxe in stock.
(Transport Tycoon is being sold in a 4-game package by Microprose, I
think, but Transport Tycoon Deluxe is no longer being manufactured,
which is a shame. Some places still have it in stock though.)
Another way is to ask on newsgroups where people buy & sell games, I
guess.

P.S. Transport Tycoon can really slow progress on any game you're
writing. :( :( :( I reinstalled it a few months ago and
my own game has suffered greatly!

In the UK you can still get Transport Tycoon and World Editor on a budget
label.
