"Interactive music", which is both the ability to control the music based on
what's happening in the game, and to be able to alter the graphics in response
to the music.
"3D localization", which is the ability to place a sound anywhere in 3-space.
Note that this can only be approximated with loudspeakers, but can be done
(with a LOT of DSP) pretty well via headphones.
These are the two big features. Of course, we'll assume fantastic music
quality (ala XG or GS or other proposed extensions to General MIDI), and all
the normal stuff.

BTW: i don't suppose there's a demo MASI floating around, so i can
see the programming interface? or are you working on a new system now? If
you're working on a new system, please PLEASE don't make it a watcom-only
type thing... some of us still code in 100% ASM under pmode 2.51 and love
it..
[vecna]
- Support soundcards via plug-in modules (to support new cards etc)
- Available for asm, Watcom, DJGPP etc
- Realtime fades/pans (ie start playing a sample, and some time in the
future be able to move it around)
- Be able to handle CDs (ie start, stop etc)
- Handle "mood" music (ie after every block, the engine would check
some game-set variable that determines the mood for the current
section, and the engine would start playing the next appropriate block)
- Take no cpu time
- Be free
You should be able to handle 1-5 pretty well, but 6-7 might take a while :-).

I think the ultimate sound/music system should be an expandable one,
so that total rewrites will not be necessary (neither will relearning to
use a new system be a problem). Not tied to any limits, and functions can be
expanded easily by other authors with some relatively 'simple' coding. (eg.
drivers, surround sound functions, iMuse-like systems, whatever)
The ultimate system should also be freely available and widespread in
use.
Oh yeah...most definitely, must be able to handle MOD/S3M/XM, multiple
sound efx, 3D sound...eerrr..or at least, some degree of stereophonic sound,
handles doppler effects (just kidding), and doesn't need headphones/speakers
(another bad joke), connects to the brains through several wires (uh-oh..
I'm losing control ...AGAIN ;-)

Now that I think about it more, it should be able to work well with
games that use timing mechanisms, and example source code demonstrating
using the system with a game that needs VGA timing at the same time.
It also should be affordable to the everyday person. With DSIK being
only $30, the UMSS shouldn't cost more than $50.

Sorry, but its **NOT** the best.. I dont want to say which is the best,
because there are many good libraries out there.. I dare say VAT is good,
but it isnt the best.. sound quality leaves a lot to be desired, so it
gets a poor mark from me.
But whatever butters your muffin..

There are some problems with it, but if you are on a budget, this is
probably the highest quality product for the least cost. If you have
thousands of dollars to throw arround, good for you!.

I agree. Try out MIDAS 0.4 instead. Much better. SB, MSSS, GUS support.
I've used it in a game I'm submitting to the x2ftp games compo.

Since we are chatting about which sound libraries are the best,
does any1 have any comments about HMI's SOS ?
I have been developing with DSIK up to this point, and have found
it has a very low CPU usage, and is a good library.
I have recently received HIM's SOS, but I am a little reluctant to
plunge into it without hearing a bit about it first.
It has a long list of reputable games behind it, incl. Descent,
Command and Conquer, to a new but two.
If you have any gripes, or praise for this software, please let me
know.

Yeah, I think midas is a good one, although not really written with the
games market in mind really.. but very good quality on an SB, via the
use of volume ramping.. basically it plays well...
Ok, well... if we're gonna do some recommends??
I use DSIK - under watcom prot mode.. its stable, sounds good, but is not
without problems.. there ARE some bugs with GUS support.. although carlos
probably has them sorted now, and certain S3M files dont sound right, but
thats because its MOD format mixing.. so I cant grumble..
If I were to look on x2ftp I think there are probably what 10 or so sound
systems now?? I dont see why you should get all of em and JUDGE FOR YOURSELF
as its YOU that has the final say.. plus, you really need to HEAR what the
libs sound like compared to each other.. for instance Midas is usually very
clean and loud on my SB1.5, whereas VAT sounds like an old wind up grammophone,
so its horses for courses.. :)))))
Anyways... I love em all :)
Well, I hear SOS is ok to develop with... but if youre already using DSIK
and it works well for you, why change????
I guess SOS may have support for more cards maybe.. but thats a side issue
really.. as most of the time SB support (and maybe GUS and AWE) is enough..
Its really a matter of trying it, and seeing which is easiest to use, and
sounds best.. dontcha think???
