This is according to my card-playing Hoosier grandparents...

This is usu. a 4-person game, but can be adapted for more or even for 3.
I'll describe the 4-person game since its more common.

The deck is 40 cards: 2 decks of A-10 (so there are 2 A of spades, etc.)

Each person gets 10 cards from the dealer. There is no kitty, since there
are no cards left over. The person to the left begins the bidding round
which lasts only ONE turn (so the dealer always gets the last bid; this
sounds weird, but it actually makes the bidding very interesting). Bidding
is performed like Bridge, except that there is no suit rank. So, to
advance on 6 clubs would require 7 or more of any other suit. The number
bid represents the minimum number of tricks that must be taken (out of
10). The suit bid represents the trump suit. No-trump as as "suit" is
allowed. "Pass" is also allowed. After the four bids (remember, only ONE
round of bidding), the highest gets the bid and contract. He/She also gets
to lead. Follow suit normally; jacks are played like in Euchre.

After the hand, the winner of the bidding counts his/her tricks. If he/she
made the minimum number, then he/she scores the number of tricks (not the
bid number). If he/she fell short, then he/she loses the number of BID
tricks. So, even if one is 1 trick short, one loses 7 points (if one bid 7
spades). Each person plays for him/herself. In cases where two identical
cards are played in the same trick, the card played first wins. The game
is played to 32.

3-person variation:
The deck is 32 cards: 2 decks of A-J.
10 cards dealt as usual, but the 2 leftover cards are the kitty, which may
be examined and exchanged for cards in the bidding winner's hand, after
the bidding.

Other variations:
So long as 10 cards are dealt to each player, you can adjust the deck-size
to your group.

I've only played the 4-person game, but I like it very much. Please
inquire if any of this is not clear. I hope this helps.
