I am trying to find out the origin of Pinochle. Who invented it? when?
where? The research I have done so far suggests that it is an
American variation of the French Bizique which started in the early
20th century. But this is very sketchy and our Pinochle club would
sure like to know the real answer. Thanks.

According to Andrew Pennycook's "The book of card games", Pinochle was
probably a German variation of Bezique called Binokel (from which the word
Pinochle comes) brought to America by German immigrants. In America it
developed into several variations and became very popular. It is unlikely
that any particular person invented it, and if so, it is probably not
recorded. Like most card games there is an evolution of "variations" along
the timeline, some die out, some eventualy develop into new games. Binokel
is - according to Pennycook - probably more or less the same word as
binocular, but in the "real" meaning of the word: double-eye.
