I may be holidaying in Turkey or Greece soon.
Does anyone have any information on the playing cards available in these
countries, or where good places to find them might be?

Regards,
Keng Ho

Hi, Keng Ho. Have you thought about joining the International Playing-Card
Society? I recommend it highly. http://i-p-c-s.org/

Sound advice, Tom.
I'm already a member. :)
However, I don't have the time to put an add in the next issue of the
Playing Card, which is why I am hoping someone might be able to
provide some tips on where to get a good range of locally made playing
cards.
For instance, where would I go to get Greek playing cards with Greek
letters for indices?
Regards,
Keng Ho

In Greece, playing-cards are mostly sold in souvenir shops, and those
are all sorts of souvenir and nude model packs. They have international
(English) indices. Many of them are produced in Greece (or Hongkong, or
China). Actually, you can see many of them offered in ebay auctions.

The regular cards are mostly imported, with the international (Poker)
pattern. There used to be packs with Greek letter indices, but I doubt
that they are still available -- you will have to try. Those were sold
when there was still a monopoly on playing-cards, and they were sold in
tobacco shops.

Good luck!

I forgot about Turkey. The regular cards there have the Belgian-Genoese
pattern, and they are usually printed abroad (Belgium, Hungary, ...).
The boxes usually show some Turkish distributor. If I remember
correctly, I got mine in stationary shops.

You may be lucky and get an old pack that used to be sold by the state
monopoly, with a mark on at least one card, often on all of them.

If you visiting Athens then may I suggest the Sunday market that is held
around the Acropolis and can be an interesting source for playing cards.

You may be lucky enough to find a souvenir deck from the early 20th century
with Greek heritage depicted - I am sure you will enjoy the market anyway -
have fun.

If perchance you are visiting the lovely island of Corfu please get in touch
as we will be there September / October and could meet for a glass of wine
and swap 'playing card stories'.

Just as a reminder: the annual conference of the I.P.C.S. will be in
Schaffhausen (Switzerland) at the end of next week. There will be an
interesting programme ;-)
