Because there was lots of requests for the rules of the Czech card game
Marias in English and noone seemed to know about any I decided to write
them on my own. They are on my homepage:

http://www.lookup.com/homepages/80150/TOMCZ.html
(Czech page)
or

http://www.lookup.com/homepages/80150/TOME.html
(English page)

If you have any suggestions such as about mistakes etc. please feel free
to write me. I appreciate it and will include in the next update.

I am sure that John McLeod would be eager to add your pages (including
the Czech version) to the Card Games site at
http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/card-games
Would you be so kind as to e-mail him your permission to copy your html
files locally?
Thank you for publishing the rules in English--they're rather hard to
come by, as you saw on this news group.

Incidentally, a Czech friend who visited me last summer brought me a pack
of Ferdinand Piatnik and Sons' reissue of the "Prague Pattern" cards with
which this game is often played. Up until recently, the cards were only
available from the Czechoslovak state monopoly, OTK, and these were of
rather poor quality. The 32-card pack retailed for a little over 5 Czech
Crowns, and, I was amused to see, bore a K-mart price label, showing how
much "zlata Praha" has changed, since I last visited there!

Piatnik's stock number for the deck is Nr. 1887, and the name of the pack
is "JEDNOHLAVE HRACI KARTY PRAGER BILD" (single-figured playing-cards,
Prague pattern).

Czechs also use a pattern called the "Seasons Pattern" by collectors, or
sometimes the "William Tell Pattern," which is double-figured. Unlike
the Prague pattern, it is a pattern widely used in Austria, Hungary, and
even Slovenia for regional card games.

I feel that one should always make an effort to play such regional games
with the appropriate equipment; it adds to the enjoyment and atmosphere.
