Well, this will be the first year that I don't have a ton o' pix to post
for you all, sorry :(

Usually I have someone who can watch my table while I cruise and take
pics and this year it was supposed to be my lovely daughter, Jasmine.
However, as Mario noted, his wife Patricia, Dianna Ritchie and Ruth
Gligorea just happened to be walking out of the hall just as we were
coming in. They spotted Jasmine and before we could even get our wrist
bands they whisked her away! I didn't see hide nor hair for over 6
hours! So I was literally stuck at my table both days so again I
apologize for the lack of pics.

Now, I also need to give a hearty thanks to the ladies mentioned above
for doting on my daughter so much. I sincerely appreciate each one of
them and after all these years we really are more a family than just
simply friends.

On to the show. What an amazing array of games! WOW! The last official
number I heard was 438 games. Not all were pins though but still well
over 400 pinballs? Are you kidding!? Crazy days and I thank every one
who brought games or chipped in to help the folks who drove around the
better part of northern California picking games up. Greg Ong, Michael
Schiess, Bob Conner and others who helped them are the real unsung
heroes of the show. Games were picked up, dropped off for staging at the
Pacific Pinball Museum in Alameda and then packed up again for delivery
to the show. Amazing choreography and they'll be doing a return delivery
this coming weekend. I think we can all applaud their incredible effort.
The SPG kicked in big time, thanks guys and dolls!

Fact is the main exhibit hall had reached a sort of legal capacity and
they were turning games away on Friday. Wow. Of course every one of us
in this group KNOWS there's always room for one more, right? :) But the
legalistas that run the center must not be true believers like us :)

The DMD and solid state area grew leaps and bounds this year. PPE
organizers listened to the people and while everyone loves the history
and beauty of the older games the vocal majority cried out for more of
the modern games. All aisles in the DMD area were just packed with
people. Techs like Chris Kuntz and the crew of medics were busy keeping
things playing smoothly. I don't think I saw more than two games down at
any one time and they were usually back up and rnning within an hour.
Thanks, tech staff! I totally loved the classic Sterns all in a LONG
row. I've played most at the odd time here and there but all together in
one row was an amazing sight. They got played!

Of course all the added games meant that the vendors had to relocate and
since they had to move the seminars had to move also. Seminars were held
across the walk bridge in the Embassy Suites Sausalito room which was
actually quite nice. The happy racket of 400+ pinballs is great but
maybe not so much when you're trying to hear your favorite seminar :)
Last years seminar room became a vendor space so all in all the PPE team
pulled off a good compromise once again. Mutterings of finding a new
venue could be heard from players but personally I would hate to leave
this gorgeous location. The Marin civic center is so just right for what
we need in a pinball show. A bazillion access doors on flat level ground
and acres of parking all in a beautiful setting. I hope we can stay! But
that's my vote :)

The "big event" for me was dedicating a super nice (thanks to Steve
Charland and Greg Ong) Fireball that was once owned by Al Garber. A
group of us were able to acquire this game which Al had sold and
regretted selling but was never able to reacquire while he was still
with us. Mike Perschied did a lot of the leg work negotiating and doing
the pick-up. Greg Ong was able to deliver it to Steve Charland's place
where they shopped it out and got it running good as new. Steve was able
to actually make some bushings for the zipper flippers that made it
probably the best, snappiest playing FB I've ever played. Steve
discovered an Al Garber trademark clip lead he obviously used to set the
game up for free play for it's new owners at the time. Steve wisely left
that clip lead in there to honor Al. We had a memorial plaque made in
anodized blue aluminum and cut to fit the Bally diamond shape and
applied it to the coin door. e applied it in a group ceremony on
Saturday with Al's wife Debbie and their friend Laura on hand. Ron Chan
literally struggled to speak for all of us but did manage well despite
shaky voice and misty eyes. None of us could have said what he did any
better and it's a testament to his love and courage to have represented
us so well. Charland couldn't talk at all, and truthfully, neither could
I. There wasn't a dry eye in the place. Debbie was very honored that her
husband was cared for so deeply by so many. Tons of pics were snapped
but by whom I'm not sure. I just hope we all get to see the pics soon.
We all played some games on his Fireball, even Debbie, before we signed
the papers releasing it for display at the Pacific Pinball Museum. I'd
like to thank the musuem for offering to keep the game there for all to
see and play in honor of Al. In particular, Brad Grant and Michael
Schiess who were tireless in making the museum space happen.

Whew. Ok by far the most fun was a small group of us having a blast at
BJ's for dinner after the show Saturday night. I'd love to go into
details but would probably just embarrass myself :) Suffice to to say it
was memorable, especially for Mr. Ritchie and Joe Gioffre :) Big thanks
to Steve Charland for his generosity and I'll say no more on that....
for now :) Ok, I will say I love making people laugh and Charland and
Mario are great laughers. Cheryl and Patricia were a bit mortified and
Jasmine just tolerates her dad. Ok, enough of that :)

It's said that behind every successful man there is a great woman.
Apparently this applies to the PPE as well. Behind this fantastic show
is a legion of folks and the true hero I would like to nominate for
woman of the year is DeAnna Jordt. She's sweet as apple pie but has the
fortitude and patience to get things done. She genuinely cares about
everyone's experience there from vendors to staff to the playing public.
Someone give that lady a trophy :)

Lastly, thanks as always to all my friends who looked me up for a chat
or a swig (rye, Tony? Yowza!) Mr. 68 stopped by for a sit down and I was
thrilled he was able to make the show. I got to shake hands with one of
my all time favorite pinbal artists, Greg Freres and chat with his wife
for just a bit. A lot of long haulers there this year which makes me
feel guilty that I don't get out of the state like I used to anymore.
It's cliche by now that the games are just vehicles that get us all
together to socialize. We love 'em, we play 'em, we fix 'em, we collect
them but ultimately it's the people we come to know and friendships we
build that cause us to even have the darned things in the first place.
Otherwise we'd all be better off collecting stamps. NAH! :) See you guys
and gals at the next one!

I second the nomintion for Deanna, she seemed to always be where you
could find her if needed, and was always smiling and helpful. I'd be
a basket case by Friday evening if I was in her place!!

The show was great as it always has been, to me it is the best,
period!! The diversity of games to play is simply mind boggling,
something for everyone is an understatement. I love the location, the
hotel, the people, it's just a great show!

As part of the group who put together the complete collection of
Classic Stern's, it was really gratifying to hear all the comments
about them, it was quite a sight to be able to see them all together.

Hard to believe that next year will be the 5 year anniversary!!!!
See everyone there!!

Great comments, Cliff... not much I can add to it.

I was helping with tear down yesterday and was quietly working down
the row of woodrails when I reached a Fireball that seemed
(locationally) out of place. I didn't think too much of it and removed
the head and (gently) set it down. I propped up the back of the game
got the back legs off, set it down and went around to the front to
stand it up to take the front legs off. As I got it up (no comments,
please), I noticed for the first time, the sticker on the coin door
and I realized that this was Al's game. I wasn't there for the
dedication, but I did see Mario's comments about the game posted here
before I went over there yesterday.

I was saddened a bit ans struck by the beauty of the gesture. You guys
did a great thing in tracking the game down. I finished taking the
legs off. looked at it a little longer, and moved on with both a
little sadness and joy in my heart.

Cliffy failed to mention.....ah-hum........that Steve Gligorea and I
discovered what our wives had done by stealing his daughter away and
that he was stuck at his table, so we went to the snack bar and got
him a hot dog and drink. It took a while to find a whole one in the
garbage but Steve is talented and came up with one. I hope the little
kid he stole the chips from has stopped crying by now.

Actually it was a pleasure to do this for Cliffy as he does so much
for the rest of us. Great write up Cliffy and you are correct. We have
become one big overweight family!

Yeah, Deanna was really great. During the load-in on wed/thurs she
was fielding a thousand questions and issues. Ron Chan, who
coordinated the seminars and put together the brochure, was also a
pleasure to work with.

Some of the highlights for me were seeing my friend Neil Shatz win the
expert tournament. We went to celebrate afterward and of course we
had to sneakily pay for the champagne and appetizers because Neil's
wife Min (who helped out both days scorekeeping) wouldn't let us pay
for anything.

I met a cool guy from Chile who showed up Wednesday to help with load-
in and attend the show. He is a big EM pinhead and he told me all
about pinball in Chile. I encouraged him to do an article for
pinballnews.com and he sounded excited about the idea. I also got to
meet another Danish player named Mikkel, a friend of my friend Mads
Kristensen.

I got to see Martin Ayub of pinballnews.com, who I met at last year's
PPE. We got to watch the tournament finals since he was recording all
the seminars the rest of the time. I can't wait to listen to
everything I missed, especially Todd McCulloch's seminar.

Speaking of which, I got to chat with Todd in the tournament area.
Super nice guy. Somehow we got to talking about Playland not at the
Beach and he and a friend went over there for a couple hours. He had
a great time.

Great write up Cliffy.

I was proud to be part of the volunteer team (a small part) for such a
well run event. The organizers certainly have their act together and
this year's show was nothing short of jaw-dropping.

One disappointment was Mario's 'free box'. Mario offered to bring
another free box to this year's show, but the box was full of pinball
parts. There were still a few items remaining when I left the show on
Sunday, so I never did get my free cardboard box. :o)

The shear number of pins was staggering. I walked the floor for 2
days and didn't notice Kerry's Gun & Roses until it was being hauled
out. That speaks volumns for either the number of pins or for my lack
of attention. And they put me on security??

This was my first opportunity to see/speak with Gene Cunningham in
person. It was interesting to hear his thoughts on BBB, KP, and our
friend in AUS. Thanks for the laughs Gene...

The highlights of my weekend were seeing Al's Fireball dedicated to
the PPM (what a touching event), Cliffy (Rita & Jasmine), Mario &
Patricia, the folks of SPG, Mark, Brian, 8 guys named 'Steve', the PPE
crew, the unbelievably polite and respectfull attendees, & the great
vendors. Oh yeah, and watching Cliffy eat that 'free' hot dog...

Thanks again to all,

Steve (in Escalon, CA)

I fourth it! DeAnna IS a pleasure to work with!

Thanks, Cliffy for such a great write-up. Wow, I will never forget the
Al Garber Fireball ceremony, nor will I forget Al who taught me many
things about pinball and, for that matter, life.

All told, we had over 140 volunteers working on the show this year,
from load-in starting Tuesday September 28, through the show over the
weekend and then to tucking in the last game, this afternoon, Tuesday
October 5. More work continues this Sunday when Greg Ong and friends
takes a truck-load of games back to their owners in the Sacramento and
surrounding areas.

Thanks to all the volunteers and to all those who attended one of the
greatest pinball parties on earth!

Mario, I thank you and Steve again for the hot dog rescue but I thought
the kiss was thanks enough? I have the pics! You looked pretty happy! :)
I'll thank Steve later too :* :)

Steve I had heard of your incredible generosity before and even
witnessed it from time to time but stealing a bag o' chips from some
hapless kid, probably one of the numerous Woodruff kids, just to make
sure I never moved from my table... well, I'm humbled. That even beats
the heck out of the Stargate story :)

And huge thanks to you for managing to wrangle up so many volunteers AND
managing the schedules, Brad. If I wasn't clear before let me say now
(because I know from experience) the people behind the scenes MAKE the
show and all are owed a debt of gratitude :)

You big tease. After all the time I took in the recycle bin draining
coke cans to fill yours and you bring up that sloppy kiss. I am
dissapointed. Patricia says she's going to keep her eye on you from

Seriously, it was a blast and I look forward to catching up with you.
Mr. Ritchie will probably have a few words for you later :-)

Hey Cliffy,

Thanks for all the kind words on our labor of love, the PPE and it's
benefactor, the PPM. I just wanted to point out that there is one
other lady behind the scenes that deserves some recognition.

My lovely wife Melissa Harmon.

She runs the raffle, solicits for prizes, does the press releases,
takes care of finances, insurance, permits and a lot of other behind
the show details that no-one ever hears about. She works tightly with
DeAnna Jordt and without these two wonderful ladies, our show would
certainly not fire on all cylinders.

And they look good doing it too!

Thanks to all who attended.

PPE was a blast this year, no doubt. The following is a "book" I have
written, but I have left out a lot of the people and events that I saw
this year at PPE

To Michael Scheiss, Ron Chan, the wonderful Melissa Harmon, and
"Sweetie" DeAnna Jordt (because women are waaaay more efficient than
us dopes), I say a job well done! Awesome show!!

From my point of view, the 438 some-odd-games really reflected a nice
and needed change in the increase of DMD and SS games. "Give the
people what they want" is my favorite PT Barnum quote. You guys did
it. The PPE lacks nothing now, and the pins and service staff were
remarkably functional.

At one point, I had fun fixing a ST:TNG with a fix-it staffer, but I
can't remember his name! Regardless, we got that sucker running again
in short order! He had it together with his skillz, and it was a
great experience.

I really enjoyed seeing my old and talented pinball friends from
Williams/Bally, Greg Freres (as well as Andi Freres) and Doug Watson.
When I thought about the three of us selling stuff instead of creating
pinball machines, I got a little verklempt!

It was great to meet and greet all the pinheads, some of whom (I'm
thinking Michael Shaloub and his buddy Dan Robar) who came so far to
enjoy a great show. These guys were dynamos of pinball excitement and
passion!

Martin Ayub is a truly amazing character that produces so much work
from so many angles! I love how Pinball News is so very thorough and
honest with game play assessments. If someone has to criticize my
games, let it be Martin with his journalistic excellence, diligence,
perfection, and an open mind. Amazing, I tell you! Thanks for
getting me hooked up for my seminar, Martin. You're the best!

And the women!!! Andi Freres (fresh from Bitche Camp in Germany which
she attended with sweatheart Anja Wiest-check out Greg Freres blog)
was sassy and fun. The lovely Patricia van Cleave was a help at the
booth. Me own Dianna (if you are my true friend, you know I call her
"The Wanda" or just Wanda) was a sweetheart to help "man" the booth
("woman" the booth? I think not!) Jeri Ellis, the electronic genius
and all-around nice person (except when she is wielding her wand! Look
Out!) was there. Then there was Jasmine Rinear; a sweet girl and a
lot of fun to be around! She cracked me up with a few off-the-wall
observations, and that smile (definitely her beautiful mother's
contribution) is contagious and lovely. She is a smart cookie, too,
unlike her dad! ("Just tolerates her Dad?" Yeah, I can see that,
Bruno! I feel sorry for the girl, and I know a clown when I see one
(clue... it ain't her).....:<)) ) Then there is Ellen Highley and her
wonderful hugs! It's a good thing her husband Don wasn't around. He
woulda been jealous!

Speaking of Jasmine Rinear's father, could you guys (Michael, Ron,
Dan, Danny etc.) find it in your hearts to ban Cliffy from the Pacific
Pinball Exposition next year? His sense of humor and weirdness should
be contained in an insane asylum, not a pinball show. I can't imagine
EVER eating in a restaurant with the guy again! You may find grounds
to prevent him from attending the next show by considering him a
"Hazardous Waste Container", because he is "full of it". I hear that
his Protectors contain heavy metals, and so does his brain! If you
need more help to prevent Cliffy from being at the next PPE, please
contact me. I have endless amounts of proof and imaginative legal
angles. For God's sake, he kissed Mario! I don't even think he was
drinking! I'll get Phoebe to help, too. She knows he's nutz!

Those cool giant "portable murals" Dan Fontes creates are so bitchin!
I noticed that there were some new ones around the hall! Gorgeous!!

Question, Dan: When are you going to "do" Black Knight or BK2K? Get
on it Dan, or we probably won't be speaking much anymore. :<)) (PS: I
think I can help with permissions!)

I am actually thankful that Ron Chan didn't attend my seminar. I was
pretty sure he was going to eject me for not being scientific enough,
but I was really trying Ron, honest! Maybe you sat in the back? Who
knows?

It was great to see all the folks that love pinball, and I autographed
a ton of stuff for attendees.

I liked seeing a Firepower machine with a space ship on top that fired
at me while I played. Thanks, James.

I totally missed the Al Garber/Fireball thing. It seemed like a nice
gesture, and if Steve Charland and Cliffy had anything to do with it,
it was probably good and right. That was hard for me to type that
right there about Cliffy, but the information contained therein MAY be
true.

I saw and spoke to Mike Pacak. Mike is a principle (with Rob Berk) of
the Pinball Expo in Chicago. I think he was very impressed with the
PPE this year.

When it came time for my seminar, (late Sunday afternoon) I went to
the hall at the Embassy Suites and personally thanked "all three
people" who showed up, but the next time I looked up, the room was
packed! It was fun to interface with the crowd. I really wish I
could have stayed for the Inventors Panel. I really admire Tanio
Klyce's, Jeri Ellis' and Wade Krause's work and enthusiastic ideas
(and implementation!). Mario Van Cleave is another pinball "wiseguy"
who knows everything about how they work, and can fix anything! These
4 are so damned passionate about pinball that I would work with them
in a heartbeat if I had the chance.

The whole pinball "family thing" is becoming more and more apparent.
Matt Christiano's Fun Nights, Pin-A-Go-Go, the Northwest Pinball show,
Pinball Expo in Chicago, the Texas Pinball Show, the UK Pinball Party
and all the rest of the shows reflect how much we all get into
pinball, but when we are all played out, the friendships remain as the
highlight of the whole deal. Think about that statement! You know
it's true!

I got exactly 2 minutes with the mighty Todd McCullough, and though
they were short, the man's heart came through in a microsecond. We
have been to lots of shows together, but I never got to hear him
speak, and I wish I could have made the time to hear his seminar. He
is great guy and a high-profile ambassador of pinball, as well as a
personal friend. He helped me out learning how to play Texas Hold 'Em
Poker against Gary Flower at the UK Pinball Show!!!

Speaking of Gary Flower, we put him up at our place (or was it "put up
with him" or perhaps "put him in his place":<) for the week following
the PPE. We had a great time arguing and bickering about how even his
best English friends don't understand his accent, and my use of the
word "Aborigines" (and the fact that they chase us with spears and
bows) when referring to a fantasy trip to ride the Australian Outback
on dirt bikes that Pinhead Brian Cady and I have been envisioning....
(Brian and I can dream can't we? Let's just say it involves a C-130
transport plane, a motorhome, a pilot that doubles as a gourmet chef
and motorhome driver, 2 off-road KTM motorcycles and 2 BMW F-800 GS
Adventure bikes. But I have not stayed on topic here.) Gary was a
welcome guest, and the conversations were stimulating to say the
least. My hearing was an annoying nuisance, but we managed, did we
not Gary? Gary and I go a looong way back, and he is a dear friend.

It was great to see the Pin Game Journal man, Jim Schelberg at the
PPE. We talked about some upcoming articles and I enjoyed the tail
end of his seminar.

I have to say that the Pacific Pinball Exposition 2010 was a great
show, and I hope the Pacific Pinball Museum is able to expand as a
result. I love going to Alameda, visiting with Michael, Melissa,
Julie and Dan and playing my old favorite games there. It brings me
back to the pinball I knew as a kid, and the time I spent with my Dad
playing them. He liked playing them as much or more than I did! He
was proud that his 2 sons were creating pinball machines, and he
played our games every chance he got.

I may post on PPE 2010 again, but for now I will shut up and say
goodbye!

And I forgot to mention the dinner with Joe Gioffre.
We had a great time that was rudely interrupted by Cliffy's antics.
It was a calm and interesting end of the day. The pizza was great
too!
Thanks Joe. We can fix Cliffy's ass later!

The show was so big and so busy I actually missed you. But there was
a Getaway in the Tournament and another on the floor, one of my
favorite games of yours (T2 and T3 are my faves). However, it was
nice meeting you at Matt Christiano's (which was like the Bohemian
Grove/Eyes Wide Shut of pinball). I got to play BK2000 for the first
time which was a totally new playfield experience for me, and the
music is really amazing on that game.

The show was astonishing and it was a real pleasure being able to
contribute more this year. Mads Kristensen and I were way out of our
depth amongst the talent, with the level of technical knowledge and
history people present. I'm glad we didn't get booed off stage, but
handing out some free stuff always helps. :-)

Thankyou for the detailed information - from all I have read and
seen , this has to be THE pinball event to attend these days.

Some of us Aussies are planning to attend in 2012 and CANT WAIT.
Would be great to meet some of you in person......and of course play
400+ games all weekend !

Steve,
Yah we'll fix Bruno next time. Great times at dinner with you. We'll
have to get together with Mario, when I'm over in your area.
Thanks, Joe
