Atlantis rolled out this morning from its hangar (OPF-1) to the VAB.
I shot a picture of it with my RGP lanyard. Greetings from the
Kennedy Space Center.

Great Pic Ed! - I was stationed at Patrick (USAF) and got to see one
launch while I was there. No words can describe seeing a launch first
hand. I also watched other launches from my back yard in Viera.

There are no paintable surfaces on the Shuttle. They are either
'tile' (mostly on the bottom), and these are replaced as they break or
wear. The rest is thermal blanketing material that is white.

So the Shuttle is no gleaming craft from the movies, but looks more
like a hardworking space tug. She is no garage queen, but a noble
working craft.

Thanks for the pic Ed - it truly looks a 'working tug' similar to
boats in the harbour - which is how it should be.

Did you guys sort out the glue for the tiles then? I remember there
were some tile dropping off through heat on re-entry issues.

Puts my malfunctioning kickout saucer on my Medusa into
perspective :-)

Oh yes. The adhesive for the tiles is well handled now. One example
is Endeavour (note spelling). It still has many of its original
tiles.

Very nice Ed, thanks for sharing. I use to get up early and listen to
the blast off's on AM radio as we didn't even have TV at the start of
the program. Would give my right arm to take a ride on that, but not

I do not think this adhesive will fit you. I do not know any part
numbers, but it is red and it is RTV (silicone adhesive). However, it
is also very spongy because the tiles are completely rigid, yet they
are fastened to a thin metal structure that flexes. That was one of
the initial problem (lack of appreciation of the flex).

I hardly ever post any more, but just had to say Ed, that is freaking
awesome!

I still remember the first launch with Young and Crippen and I still watch
the launches to this day on the NASA channel.

Not sure how many of you guys are RUSH fans, but try listening to their song
called Countdown from the Signals album, while watching a shuttle launch on
tv. Still gives me chills to watch the launch to this day.

Again Ed, thanks for the pics!!!!

You are one lucky fellow! I was a semi-finalist in the Teacher in

Nothing can describe it. I watched every manned spaceflight launch on

yard to look for Sputnik in 1957.

Well I saw the guys selling RGP lanyards and there were well over 20
left so I thought I'd go back later and when I did they had a few left
but at that point I didn't really want one because there were 3 or 4
people waiting to get one and I thought they wanted it more than I
did...they were there till halfway through the second day.

Lloyd, I was so happy I could hardly count, I just threw the well over
20 thing out there...

Sometimes I can talk out my ass, but apparently that's not a rare
talent as I am not the only on guilty of that on the RGP!

Therefore I won't let it bother me and I hope you'll all forgive my
indescretion.

I stand corrected by the great and powerful LTG :) it looked like more
than that balled up in the guys hand, but I didn't stop to count...

Rick Swanson did these at cost or is losing on postage, and he is going to
