Red Buttons in Youssi Art ??

Anyone know what the inside joke is in Youssi's Artwork concerning the
Red Buttons? I was staring at the Whirlwind BG hanging above my desk,
and I noticed the driver of the van is holding what looks like a remote
control switch. Curious, I looked at the Fun House flyer I happened to
have on the wall, and noticed that Rudy has a similar device in his left
hand in the backglass. Anyone know of more instances of this, and what
the story is?

What other recent games has Youssi drawn for? And does he the art for
all the Lawlor games?

<cue ominous background music>

As I recall (from r.g.p), this is all part of a fiendish plot
on Pat Lawlor's part: it all started with Earthshaker, set in southern
California, where, if memory serves me correctly, the man being thrown
out of his car is holding a Thing with a red button.
Moving eastward to Kansas, we have Whirlwind. There, as you
noted, the Thing appears again, this time in the hand of the van driver.
With Funhouse, the disaster theme breaks down. On the other
hand, several astute r.g.p readers have noticed clues in the backglass
art that indicate that the game is set in Chicago, thus moving us even
further east. Once again, the ominous Thing appears in Rudy's hand.

<background music gets quite frantic>

Clearly, the Thing is no accident. It was placed there quite
deliberately, and it is converging on New York City even as we speak!
According to usually reliable r.g.p sources, the next Pat Lawlor game
should have been set in NY, and we would have found out what the
Thing really is.

I haven't seen it, though. I had some hope that Hurricane would
be the one, but I couldn't find the Thing anywhere (was it even a Lawlor
game?).
Stay tuned for further developments.

Youssi has his name on the Whitewater backglass; I haven't looked close
enough to spot a red-buttoned thing, has anyone else? There is a van in
the river in the background (possibly says wet willys on it or something),
probably could be a red button in there somewhere. There's also lots of
miscellaneous stuff in and falling out of the raft- anyone got one nearby
to check for red buttons?

Hurricane is not a Pat Lawlor game. To me, the "Thing" looks like a joystick,
not a remote control device.

The "Thing" is not associated with Youssi's art - there isn't one on the
Fishtales or Whitewater backglasses. It's associated with PL designs. There
is a "Thing" on the Twilight Zone backglass. Is there one on TAF, Banzai Run,
other PL designs? Anyone know?

My personal guess on this is that it reflects Pat Lawlor's origins at Williams
- he started out programming video games like Robby Roto. [Source: PL at Pin
Expo '93]. Therefore it would make sense if it was a joystick. And PL likes
to include little touches from his earlier games.

I recall someone posted that they asked him about this and he said
words to the effect that "some things have to remain secret".

Ha ha. I get to post before Bowen.

We went to Keystone San Jose today. They got their TZ.

Like I can say that and remain calm. It's absolutely incredible. Wow.

Anyway:

(these are mostly things Bowen noticed, so I won't spoil the cow one for
him--he's working on a paper and can't post, I assume)

a) a book entitled "My Travels with Rudy" by P.L. on the backglass

b) a dummy holding a red button

c) a sign on the playfield saying "Tokyo -> Los Angeles -> Kansas -> Chicago
-> TV Land -> Twilight Zone".

My God...what a cool game.

Nope. As Bowen said, "ooh cow cow".

(I liked that.)

And Bowen's other little trick on CFTBL is to catch one ball on the left
flipper and then tap the flipper really quickly so it doesn't think he's
holding the flipper up--eventually it does a ball search and kicks out the
other ball, which he shoots into the Whirlpool. So it can be done.

The buttons only appear on Pat Lawlor-designed pins; specifically Whirlwind,
Funhouse, and Twilight Zone (in the hand of the ventriloquist dummy).
Youssi has done the art for all three, but the button appears to be Pat's
idea. Pat won't say what it's for, you can be sure that one day there will
be a pin that explains everything. IMO I think studying the Whirlwind
backglass art gives the best clues as to what it could eventually be...

Hurricane isn't a Lawlor game, it is a Barry Oursler game.

The Lawlor games that come to mind are Banzai Run, Whirlwind, Earthshaker,
FunHouse, The Addams Family and Twilight Zone. (Have I forgotten any?)

I recently noticed that a pair of broken spectacles ARE on Twilight Zone the
pinball. They are pictured next to a stack of books on one of the plastic
light shields (near the middle).

Does he get the operator to remove the glass on both the Creature and
the Whitewater before he makes this shot, or does he just smash the
ball through both pieces of glass? :-)

Yea, also, if you look at the playfield on the right side, near
where the slot machine is, and the rocket kicker, there is are
Burgess' Merediths spectacles, and Burgess Meredith in them!
Actually, it doesn't look like Burgess Meredith, but its from
that story, anyway. Also, he doesn't look too happy that his
glasses are broken. :)

I found a Police Force last week, and one of the cops on the backglass
was holding what appeared to be a walkie-talkie, which was also red.
I checked, and Youssi's name was on it. (Probably stretching it...)

Isn't that the sonic screwdriver?

Speaking of "sonic", has anyone else heard the rumour that Williams are
working on a Sonic the Hedgehog table? It was in the Pinball Player (POA
magazine) a couple of months back, but I haven't heard anything else
since...

It's definitely a remote control or radio of some kind.

I wouldn't doubt it. Think of the video game cross-licensing that hasn't
been explored yet: Sonic and Mortal Kombat for starters. Some of the
reps at Expo last year also mentioned some of the licenses they had secured
(which doesn't mean a pin is in the works, though). I remember hearing
Ren & Stimpy, WWF Wrestling, some others. You'll never get WMS to confirm/
deny anything, DE on the other hand seems to enjoy hinting at upcoming pins.

I just played Funhouse at lunch today and got a good look at the backglass.
Rudy's got a red button in his hand with a coiled cord attached. And
Blamo, it hit me. I worked one summer at an amusement park working their
version of the Funhouse. We used buttons to operate the air jets in the
floor that blew up women's skirts! (all male pig replies will be gladly
accepted, I was 15 at the time and the woman's movement was about 5 years
away). Could this be the start of the button craze?

Sure enough, on the left central portion of the glass is a very small lady
getting her dress inflated. What is really "SPOOKY", is that just below
that are the words "feel the power"! Premonitions of TAF? Also, "Ride the
Whirlwind" is bannered in a background tent.

I wonder, what is the lead time on game design anyway? With two years between
Funhouse and TAF, I hardly think that TAF was in its formative phase that
early. But then again I've probably been exposed to too much coil electro-
magnetic field and video display terminal RF energy.

Ah, but Williams has been saying "Feel The Power" for a long time now!
Before Whirlwind, even. The promotional flyer for Big Guns says Feel The
Power on it, or something very similar. When you start Multiball on
Sorcerer (1985), the sorcerer says "Feel My Power".

And it may even go back further...
