I recently learned how to remove IC's (carefuly) and cleaning them with
an eraser. But how do you clean the sockets, where the pins go? Or
don't you? Same for connectors, I know how to clean the pins, but what
about the receiving part?
Thanks
Mark

Never clean sockets. Too much work. Jameco sells em cheap. Just order
backups of the most common type that you need for future use. AS for
the connectors, you could clean them, but it's better to get the .156
or .100 pins you need and a good crimper (Waldon / yellow handle) and
put new pins on.

Rumor has it that these were mandatory changes for any kind of
troubleshooting I will have to admit that changing sockets is the most
boring part of a repair job on any CPU's so I change ONLY the ones
that need to be changed, not every socket I come across. Putting down a
new socket/strip is mandatory when any socket needs replacing but to
change all the Game Rom sockets (just because some website said so)
makes no sense.

An don't just remove the IC's just to clean them... you'll end up
with more problems. ;-)

OK, like I said I am new, but I was told that if there was something
funny going on, that a good place to start would be to remove and clean
the IC's, as a way of trouble shooting. That sometimes when removing
and cleaning, both IC's and wire connectors, this will sometimes take
care of problems, caused by them not having good connections? Is this
bad advice? Sorry for the questions, but I am new and on the downside
of the learning curve: )
Thanks Mark

Don't feel bad, I'm asking the same type of questions. Like my long
question post about the difference between PROMS and EPROMS:

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.pinball/browse_thread/thread/369aabecec4fae87/c3f540c36e5c8541#c3f540c36e5c8541

It's like they say in school; it's better to ask questions than not.

my opinion is not to reseat multiple ICs or pull them just to clean
them. If you have a problem traced down the the IC, sure, pull it
clean it, probe the traces while it is out, maybe there is a short.
put it back, probe, continue debug... but just don't pull the ICs to
clean them because old TTL chips will loose a leg, or you will bend one
(or more!) and not see it isn't seated in the socket... plus the
sockets themselves may fail.

Jameco sells them cheap allright - cuz they're crap!!! After 2
attempts at buying sockets from them, I gave up. I mean what kind of
idiots pack stuff w/ obviously bent pins, busted off corners, etc.
Morons - that's who!

Get them from Big Daddy or Great Plains (connectors too), or Allied or
Mouser - forget Jameco.

My Lost World Bally pin croaked while a friend of mine was here. He just
removed a chip, cleaned the legs, reseated it, and the game has worked fine
since.

If this helps at all, the only chip that I have ever pulled and cleaned
was from a Bally Sqawk & Talk board sound board. This was only due to
the rarity of the chip, and it's very common for this particlular
chip's legs to become blackened. There's nothing worth doing to a
socket, outside of replacing it.

Same goes for the connectors located in the the female plug of a board
edge connector or a header connector. Just replace the connectors if
they look suspect, so they can be eliminated when troubleshooting an
issue.
