As I begin the stretch run of completing my garage conversion to a game room, I started thinking about quality versus quantity.

So here is the hypothetical.

You somehow end up on a game show very similar to Wheel Of Fortune from the 80's-90s. You are the big winner and you have $10,000 to spend buying pinballs from their "Pinball Store". You must spend as much of the money as possible at their "Pinball Store". Any balance remaining is donated to your favorite charity. The show will cover the shipping costs to your home.

You have room for up to four pinball machines. The spirit of this game is to choose games that you will keep and play. For the purpose of this game, the games purchased from the "Pinball Store" can never be sold, gifted or exchanged.

All games are nice condition and fully working. Nice condition implies minimal damage to the cabinet and little to zero playfield wear. Newly released games from Stern, JJP and Ben Heck are floor samples, i.e. New but out of box.

These are the choices.

$10,000 - Medieval Madness
$10,000 - Ben Heck's Zombie Adventure (New)
$10,000 - IPB Big Bang Bar
$10,000 - Cactus Canyon
$10,000 - Krull
$10,000 - Capcom Kingpin
$8,000 - Stern Tron LE (New)
$7,500 - Stern AC/DC Back In Black LE (New)
$7,500 - Stern AC/DC Let There Be Rock LE (New)
$6,500 - Stern AC/DC Premium (New)
$6,500 - JJP Wizard of Oz Emerald Edition (New)
$6,500 - Stern Transformer LE (New)
$5,500 - Attack From Mars
$5,500 - Monster Bash
$5,500 - Twilight Zone
$5,500 - Cirqus Voltaire
$5,500 - Stern Spider-Man New
$5,000 - Theatre of Magic
$4,500 - Any Stern "PRO" Version (Iron Man, Avatar, Tron, TF, AC/DC) New
$4,500 - Stern Lord Of The Rings New
$4,500 - Stern Pirates Of The Caribbean New
$4,500 - Stern Iron Man New
$4,000 - Stern Simpsons Pinball Party New

$3,000 - Any mass produced Bally/Capcom/Gottlieb/Stern/Williams DMD Game not listed above.

$2,250 - Any mass produced Bally/Gottlieb/Stern/Williams SS Game from 1980's-90's not listed above.

How do you spend the $10,000?

I would take the Capcom Kingpin. I love the game play on virtual pinball. I really wish Gene could get enough people to reproduce this game.

My second choice was AC/DC Back In Black ($7,500) + Stern Star Gazer ($2,250).

My third choice was Ben Heck's Zombie Adventure.

If you can't ever sell them, you go for quantity. There's tons of games
to choose from that aren't the heavy hitters.

Even the best games//a level games get boring after a while.

I love spiderman, but the thrill for me has worn off right now. Give it
a couple months, it'll probably come back.

I guess I was thinking from the point of view of adding to my existing collection. So, in my mind, I have space for 4 more pinball machines.
But I chose to spend my winnings on a pricier game since I consider game show money to be found money.

If I had 0 pinball machines, then I would agree with quantity.

I would want four and that would rule out all the individually listed
games ( a few of which I own). So, I would go something like Diner,
Shadow, IJ and another cheap DMD or Sys 11 (FH maybe) and try to make
that work in $10K (there would be a credit from Shadow right --
they're not $3k yet......). Plus I'd give some of my own $$ to
Charity.

I look at it from experience with my own collection. It comes down to
ROOM.

You only have room for four pins, why make it junk? Get the best
"one" you can get, the other 3 spots will fill up soon enough later.
Get the one you want, but could not get otherwise?

Krull may be rare, but is it fun? If you can't sell it, it is just
taking up a "limited" spot.

Or how about this, I get the MM and sell my MM. You said I could not
sell it not mine.

I own 24 pins (use to be more) but only have room for 14 of them
setup. Guess what is setup? The best. I have been rotating and
upgrading my collection for years. Funny how people say they would
rather have 4 pins than 1. But if you own 4 and have room for 1 what
do you setup?

To me more expensive games don't really play any better than cheaper
games - some people just like having high end fully restored high end
games to say they have them. Does anyone really think MM is 5 or 6
times as much fun as WW or Space Shuttle? Don't get me wrong I would
love to own a MM,MB,SS, etc but since I have "X" amount to spend on
pins and "X" amount of space I think it is better to own several nice
pins than 1 or 2 high end pins.

If I was doing a "new gameroom" I would do it the same way we did
ours. Several $600 to $3000 machines instead of a couple higher end
machines. I also think it is neat to have machines from different
times to have an overview of the hobby not just the "latest &
greatest".

I don't think I would like our gameroom near as well if it didn't
include machine like Black Hole, Space Shuttle, Revenge from Mars,
Slugfest, Whirlwind, Jungle Lord, etc. To me it is more about having
a selection of games to play than just having a MM or a couple of the
newer Stern machines. I only wish we had more space so I had room to
include some EM machines but we are limited on space and I don't want
to give up room from some of the cool 1980's machines for a couple
EM's. So normally if I have EM's around they are just passing
through.

Just my 2 cents!

Sure would for me too, if you've already got most of what you want and
you're just missing the one $10k game you like but can't justify
spending the coin on, boom, that's the one I'd pick.

True, I don't like CC and don't like CV that much. Otherwise I would
probably own them by now.

> some people just like having high end fully restored high end

Nope, I like them batter than other game I have had. Like I say you
rotate and upgrade. Trade 2 for one or sell one +$ for the better.
Takes time, I did not get them all at once.

> Does anyone really think MM is 5 or 6
> times as much fun as WW or Space Shuttle?

Yes, I like MM 5 or 6 times better. But I actually like WW. I have
two System-11 games in my collection. I have EatPM and Diner. I would
not mind a Taxi next to the Diner. I play my games. They are for me.
I don't give a crap what anyone else thinks.

Most of us only have "X" amount to spend at any one time. Some more
than others. But if it is a hobby than over time you are slowley
investing more money, and always investing your time. When you gat a
machine with problems for a good deal and put time in you just
increased you collections value. So it is not always how much you have
to spen, but how much you can aford to keep tied up.

The "X" amount of space is every pinheads bane. That is why after
years go by the pins you have room for become better.

No latest and greatest here. I have never bought NIB. I waited a few
years to get a LOTR.

That's cool. Always go for the pins you want. But if you want an MM
never say to yourself you will never own one. Not everyone likes
EatPM. But when you get multi-ball, the light show, the organ music,
Elvira saying "Nice Organ" then the wolfman howl - "Let's Party!" it
gets me every time. I have an EM, Royal Flush. I like it or I would
not own it and if I have room for every pin I own it would be setup.
But it sits in storage with the head removed for year because it just
does not do it for me like Elvia.

> Just my 2 cents!- Hide quoted text -

Hey, it is always each of our opinions. My first three pins where
Bally Star Trek, Fireball Classic and EatPM. When that was what I
owned it was the best collection in the world. Because it was mine.
Now ST sits in storage, FBC is in a Senior center for them to play (no
I'm not take their money) and EatPM sits next to Elvira Scared Stiff.
Still the best collection, still mine, just changed with time.

I would take LOTR and CV, then sell my copies of each. Then take the
10k and buy what I want, and sell if I please. I know LOTR and CV are
not leaving my collection, unless they are replaced with games in just
as good as shape as mine are.

Jim,

I meant the game to be from a personal perspective. So, for me, I already have some pinball machines, so I would be adding to my collection.

The idea is that you have room for 4 more pinball machines. You then win a game show and now have "found" money to spend on pinball machines.

I did not intend this to be an Desert Island scenario.

So, when I answered, I was basing my choice based on my current lineup.

Also, the no selling was basically an attempt to thwart someone from choosing a game for the sole purpose of flipping it. The idea was to choose a game for play rather than profit.

I'll respond to my own post with an addendum that allows people to sell later on as well as clarify that these are not necessarily your only pinball machines.

btw, you should have added Magic girl to the list. I probably would
have pulled the trigger on that. Risky tho, to be forced to keep a game
that you've never played or seen. My space is valuable, as I have none
left, so to have a game that might be a dog forced to stay, would
seriously blow ass. I guess I can always set my tools on it, or take
out the playfield, put florescent tubes in it, and use it as a light
table.

ADDENDUM TO GAME:

Spirit: Choose games that you want to play. We all could choose an expensive game and then flip it for cash and buy 10 lesser priced games. The idea is that you are on a game show and you have "free" money to spend on a pinball machine. The idea isn't to flip it. The idea is to choose between 1 highly desired game or multiple lesser priced games with your "free" money.

Selling: You can sell your game in the future. But for the purpose of this game, let's say you can only sell it for the price you paid for in the "Pinball Store".

Approach: You have room for 4 more pinball machines. You may 30 other pinball machines, but your have room for 4 more. You could also have zero pinball machines, and you are building a collection and have room for four machines. So, I chose my games by taking into consideration the other games in my collection.

You guys can keep all those BS games with all the bells and whistles.

For $10,000 dollars I could get 50-100 of the best EMs, and have a heart
attack just thinking of where to put them.

I like the idea that no one wants EMs, more for me :) At this rate they
should be flooding the market with them very soon, I get a "Woody" just
thinking about it...thanks.

Ha! Good answer.
Love the idea of this post though. 10 years on RGP and I don't think
I've seen a pinball "what if" question quite like it.
Personally, I would tend to go for the higher end games and fewer in
quantity, but then I am coming from a point of being in the hobby for a
good period of time. I am also assuming that I get to keep the games I
already have. I find that the longer you are in the hobby the less
tolerance you have for "player" games. I know this sounds somewhat
boorish, but as time goes by I find myself tweaking and tweaking my
collection towards what I consider "perfect" (unattainable I know).

See, perhaps I suck because I'm the oddity that almost all of the more
expensive games I'm rather indifferent too. I like a lot of them, but
I just like the sort of "rough edges" in my games, and so almost my
entire collection at every point in time is made up of the not
expensive titles. Of your list, I one day hope to own a MM, an IM,
maybe a CV and maybe an AFM. The other games I haven't played yet,
although knowing what I think of John Borg titles, I can pretty safely
put Tron on that list too. The only other expensive titles that I
have much of any interest in are STTNG and Creech, and I don't have
enough experience with either to know that I would actually want to
drop that sort of coin on one.

But... the games that are all on my short list at the moment would
all be a rip off if I bought them for $3k. My short list is pretty
much Shadow, BSD, Mousin' Around, Baywatch, BBH, and TFTC. I might be
missing one or two there, but for the most part, those are the games
that I like, so it would be really goofy of me to pay a certain amount
to fill in four holes.

To play the game with those exact rules, I guess I'd pick IM (I *love*
that game), BBH for $3k, and Mousin' Around for $2250. I'd run out of
cash there, but IM to me is the ultimate game, and I can't imagine I'd
want to sell it. But again, I'm weird.
