I have to switch out the pop bumper bodies on my Congo as they are all
broken badly. Never done this before and I think I have it down,
except for removing the light sockets. It looks like they are
connected by thin strips of metal that are stapled to the underside of
the cab. The socket is of course on top of the pop bumper body so the
body will not come out without removing the sockets, and I was
wondering what the best way was to do this is. I am hoping I am
missing an easy way to do this, so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

You can cut them and replace them with something like this:

Not bad...I like that.

There is a write up on the procedure in PinWiki. See section on EM
Repair, section 5.9 Pop Bumper.

http://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

You need to unsolder the wires from the "legs" of the lamp socket that
are bent 90 degrees. Straighten the legs once unsoldered. Remove all
the solder or they won't fit through the hole in the pop bumper body.
You may also have to remove one or more of the staples that are near
the ends of the ground cable in order to unsolder and remove the
socket. It's a tight area so be careful you don't hit anything with
the soldering iron tip. A small needle nose plier is very handy to
have for this procedure.
Good luck.

I've been putting this off for a while.
I've got some shredded skirts on mine.
The legged sockets kept me away for a bit.
A newbie friend of mine insisted I help with his on his pat hand.
Cause he has virtually zero soldering Exp.
After doing his I found its really easy just be clean and take your
time.

I was putting it off too, but after the bumper caps literally fell off
when I was shopping it out, I figured it was time. Thanks for the
advice everyone, I should be able to handle it now I hope... :)

Cut and replace is what I do.

It's not as difficult as you think. Glaze the tip of the iron w/
solder, apply the iron to the lamp leg/under pf wire, pull the lamp
leg slightly w/ a pair of needle nose pliers until it disengages from
the under pf wire. Then the easiest thing to do is what Sean said:
clip off the lamp leg above the solder joint, remove the socket from
the bumper body and install a fresh new socket. Then bend the legs and
solder to the under pf wire.

You're not going to mess up. After you've done one or two, you'll
breeze through any you ever have to do again. If you do have to remove
staples just pull them straight out and after you're done push them
straight back in or use a fresh staple.

if you are going to use the flexible stranded wire style light socket,
zip-tie it like this picture and it will sit low and straight in the
pop bumper body...I had read about doing it this way awhile ago here
on RGP (older post by PT). it works great as I did it on my AFM pop
rebuilds.

Good tip, I'll have to try this on my next set.

Great idea with the zip tie. Also looks like it works as a strain
relief.
I will give it a try.
