The displays on my Gottlieb System 1 flicker (strobe?), this happens at
different times. 1) When a display is flashing to indicate which player
is up, the other displays flicker/dim. The dimming seems to be opposite
of the flashing of the player that is up, the display for the player
this is up gets bright and at the same time the other displays get dim.
2) When the bonus score is being added at the end of a ball the displays
strobe, this is in time/sinc with the scoring. 3) The same strobing
happens when points are scored during play.

I have checked the display voltages and they are correct. My guess is
that this has to do with the capacitor(s) on the power supply board, any
suggestions as to which one(s) are mostlikely the cause? Or is this
strobing just normal?

Also, can anyone tell me if the displays used in the early System 80/80A
games are the same as the displays used in the System 1 games? They
appear to be the same to me, but I have only seen pictures of the System
80 displays.

Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim,
If you're talking about the intermittent flicker you get on individual
digits, they all do that. I'm not sure by your post what you mean by
"flicker", is it all digits or just some in pairs on the players displays?
Example: (in attract mode or waiting for someone to play a ball) first &
second player 10,000 digit, second & fourth player 1,000 digit. this is
normal for Gottliebs, all mine (14 system 80's) do it. On Gottliebs, the
display system runs in pairs. (like example) If the problem occurs on a
single player display, then the problem is at that display. Either a bad
connection at the plug, or a problem on the display itself. System 1 seems
to have more pronounced display "glitches" due to the fact that Gottlieb was
learning electronics at that time. Yes, you can swap displays from system 80
to system 1 and back. (as long as they're both 6 digit games) The "dimming"
could be something to do with the displays being tired. You could try
cleaning the tubes which will brighten them up. Try
