I will be creating Stencil Sets very similar to the ones I describe on
my Fathom Repaint webstie -
http://www.scott.farrar.com/fathom_cabinet.htm
These will be made out of .005 Clear Acetate. I will be making them
for numerous games (see the list below). They will be in the
$150-$175 range.
I am in the process of creating a DVD showing you ALL of the teeny,
tiny details on what it takes to repaint your cabinet, including
making these stencils - this can get boring but I feel you need all of
the details to get it right. Personally, I do NOT want to become
"Stencil Man" - I'd rather teach people how to create their own, but
in the mean time I will create "some" to get people going - these will
be limited runs, as once you see the DVD and find out how much time it
takes me to create a stencil set you'll know why I can not do these in
mass-bulk. Other people, such as MarkC @Pinheadz are more equipped to
mass-produce stencil sets.
I will NOT sell a stencil set unless you first buy the DVD. Once you
buy the DVD then I will sell you additional stencil sets. The intent
is not to make money but to make sure you are educated in the cabinet
repaint and
stencil making process. Once you know and understand how to do this
you shouldn't have to buy anything from me again (weird, but that's my
goal!). Some people may like that, some may not - but that's my
decision.
The idea is NOT for me to be making stencils (I'd rather be working on
MY games) but I will help others out. I think the best approach is to
TEACH others (similar to Clay's on-line repair guides). The best way
I know of how to teach others is by showing - either via a WEB SITE
(I've done that & Johnnie Terry has GREAT site too), a video (in the
process) or "live"/in person (John Wart when you coming down?).
The DVD shows me painting 3 Fathoms. It shows EVERYTHING. Making
Stencils, Cabinet prep work, making a paint booth, paint code
matching, picking the correct equipment, how to determine paint order,
painting the stencils, etc. 95% of the material is generic to all
games upto the mid-80s (when it looks like silk-screening was used on
cabinets). There are some special nuggets
on the DVD like the different colors (YEP, different!!) and different
stencils (YEP, different!!) used on the different Fathom runs (one set
used a YELLOW stencil color and one used a LIME stencil color...the
backbox artwork is different on the two colors). Also, I show an
original plastic set vs. a repro set from PINBALL RESCUE (awesome),
plus did you know the Plastics were done with 2 different colors (one
for the Yellow run and one for the Lime run). For those that don't
own a Fathom I'll take you thru the game play to show why this is a
VERY good single-level game - LOTS of shots and
strategy & it goes great with the theme. Beautiful artwork on the PF
and Backglass.
If you just want the 2 hour DVD, it will cost around $10-$12 (incl
shipping Cont. USA, other will pay actual shipping cost). DVDs will
be produced by DEFAULT as -R. I can make them as +R (or +RW or -RW).
Different DVD players may not work with -R or +R. There is a website
that shows what DVD Players work with -R and which ones work with +R
(it escapes me now but it will be on my
website).
Stencils + DVD will be around $170-$175/$190.
Stencils will be around $150-$175 (based on complexity and nbr of
colors - 2 vs. 3)
I am open to creating partial sets at this point in time but I'm not
keen on the idea (it better be a good story on who died).
I am open to creating UNCUT stencils - this will save me time and you
MONEY.
I'm also interested in trading stencils for Backglasses, PFs or games,
etc. Good old Green Backs are welcomed too.
Here is a current list of what I plan on doing (this is always
changing/growing):
BALLY
* Fathom * Eight Ball
GOTTLIEB
* Dragon
WMS
* Solar Fire * Hyperball
* Alien Poker * Blackout
* Firepower * Gorgar
* Stellar Wars * Contact
* Space Mission/Odyssey
* F14-Tomcat
I'm totally booked until AFTER the October Expo so I will NOT start
making Stencils until November (at the earliest).
I'll be doing these on a "need" basis, usually 2-4 at a time of one
game.
If you're interested let me know so I can get an idea of what to do
first.
Thanks for the update -- I can't wait to get that DVD! I appreciate your
approach, but just for the record, given a choice of making my own stencils
or buying a kit that included stencils and color-matched *paints*, I'd
definitely opt for the all-in-one kit. I'm sure there are just as many
CARGPB types (and folks with just a bit more time on their hands) who would
prefer to do it themselves. Your DVD will be fantastic for all of us,
either way.
BTW, please don't forget to address the splatter effect of e.g. Black Hole
cabinets ;-)

I repainted my Black Hole cabinet two years ago. For spatter effect, get some
white acrylic paint (like model paint), and pour into the bottle cap. Using a
stiff toothbrush, gently dip the tips of the bristles in the paint to have some
paint attach to the tips. Now, sitting close to the cabinet (about 18" away),
hold the toothbrush in your right hand, with head up, vertical, bristles
pointing towards the cabinet. With your left hand, put your index finger
horizontal (as though you are pointing to the right), and strike the toothbrush
against your finger. The paint will fly off the toothbrush bristles as small
droplets, and strike the cabinet in a variety of sizes of "dots". Repeat. To
get the right consistency of paint and technique, practice on a piece of
cardboard first. This works PERFECTLY.

I haven't decided what to do with my BH -- the cabinet is covered with
really lousy touch-ups -- if they'd left it alone I could have fixed it
myself with non-kindergarten touch-ups. Mostly it's just the white area, so
I may be able to sand off the bad stuff and do it myself. Of course, then
there's the broken plywood around the base of the head, missing pieces, etc.
But it's definitely do-able.
Still looking for a System 80 cabinet head U-bracket, in case anyone has a
parted out game...
Thanks much!

Great idea! I personally have no need for stencils at the current
time, but I'd still love to see the process. I'll be buying a DVD for
sure... hopefully copies sold to the merely curious like myself can
help offset your costs a little.
One more Subject Matter Expert in the pinball knowledge base... cool.
Prepare to get overwhelmed by questions from people with cabinets in
dire need of repainting. =)

We also show how to use the Pantone system to match colors
(though we use that to generate some other graphics, but
the same theory could be applied for picking cabinet colors).

Randy brings up some good points...
#1 - "Splattering" Technique
Fathom doesn't have the "splattering" technique so the DVD won't show
me doing this technique. However I do talk about it and show you an
example via a 1979 GTB DRAGON that has this technique. I talk about
the wire brush technique. Clay's TOP video (the EM one or Baseball
one) does a great job covering this technique...I will be referring
people to purchase his video to physically SEE IT DONE. I do rehash
some of Clay's comments (plagerism!!) and I do give him FULL CREDIT.
Splattering technique was done on the old EMs and firt SS games. The
reason being the splattering helped to cut down on the irregularities
on the long cabinet surfaces. Order of paint application is Base
then Splatter then Stencils (right over the splatter).
#2 - Complete set, including Paints
Most games will take 2 Quarts of paint for the base color and 1/2 to
3/4 Quart for the stenciled colors. This adds weight which increase
shipping costs. You can cruise by Home Depot or Lowes and pick the
paint up cheaper than I can send it to you. On my website I will
posting the Computer Matched Color Codes as I collect them (Fathom
colors are already posted...I still need to put the Lime-Green stencil
color). I will posting all of the WMS colors used during the Sys3-6
(black, red, yellow, white, blue, green, orange, etc) as I go thru the
cabs this Fall. I've talked to the store mgr at Lowes and he's cool
with me coming in there with my backboxes for color matching...the
staff thinks its cool/fun/different. Quarts cost around $8 each so
for a game with 3 colors (base & 2 stencil colors) your paint cost
will be around $32 plus a couple bux for a can of Krylon black paint
for the "neck" - total paint costs s/b in the $35 range. Paint for
"Splattering" effect will be a couple bux more plus the brush, but
your still under the $45 mark.
I talk about ALL of that in more in great detail...there are alot of
questions I address on what kind of paint was used, is used and why
something is good and another is bad and this/that is OK, blah, blah,
blah. Almost 2 hours of cabinet painting info.
I'll be glad to post Computer Matched Color Codes that other people
have obtained - anything to help out as there is NO WAY I'll be able
to physically get that info for every game/manufacture (WMS, GTB, BLY,
ChiCoin, DE, etc).
Oh yeh, Chris Muson redid his Black Hole and its spectacular. He
might give me some info/tips to put on my DVD (hint, hint, hint).
The concept of the DVD is so the video won't degrade over time as you
watch it Over & Over & Over again. Also, it will be broken up into
chapters so you don't have to watch it in a linear fashion - you will
be able to go directly to the chapter you want to see (conceptually
like a "visual" manual).
For those that really want a VHS tape let me know. I don't want to do
VHS tapes but I'll see if I can talk Tim Arnold into it. I will give
him the Master Copy of the DVD for FREE and he can make all of the VHS
tapes he wants and sell them & put the money toward the Pinball Hall
of Fame.
Later
Okay, then, Rustoleum "Brilliant Blue", I can't remember the exact number, but
I can look it up for you when I get home. Comes in spray can and/or by the
pint/quart. dead-on match.
Chris
Anything I can do to help, just write me offline or phone. We still need to
hook up on the Fathom stuff, SOON.....

What I most need is the white -- it's an off-white (though it's been touched
up with a bright white). Suggestions welcome ;-)
Thanks again.
