Gottlieb Rescue 911 helicopter won't lift ball

My helicopter will not lift the ball but if I help it, it will hold
it.
I rewired the helicopter and adjusted the ball lift to get it as high
as possible, but no change.
On a working game, does the ball jump upto the helicopter or do they
have to make contact ?
I also confirmed the coil is the correct one according to the parts
list.

It's been awhile, but IIRC, the magnet touches the ball. It is very
common to have sporatic breaks in the harness for the helicoptor magnet
coil. I would also check to make certain both magnet coil windings are
secured on the bobbin lugs. You may have a sketchy connection there.
