I just picked up a Taxi today and I have a sound question. The game is
quiet when first turned on and no sound when you coin up. The sound
does not start until the ball falls into play. There is no sound when
the ball is twisting around the red spiral in upper right corner. I do
not have a manual and never owned or played one before. It seems to be
in a different setting. In test it just says Sound Off and will not
let me do anything in that mode?

Thanks
Greg

sound off, hmm...pressing the start button will switch it to ON.
That's how you turn off and on the features. If this does not work it
could be your e-proms but I'm betting that not turning on sound is
your problem.

My Taxi does this sometimes if I press START right after I turn it on.
If I wait a bit until it goes through all its motions before I press
START then it's OK. Even if it does this, it seems like all becomes
normal after the ball is in play and the music starts.

Yep, same here. I have to wait until I hear a "bong" sound. Not sure
if the bong sound is good or bad though ;)

If I start before the bong sound, no sound the entire game. If I
start after, I get the sound in all its glory.

Any idea what the bong sound means?

On a Cyclone (system 11b just like Taxi) one bong means all is
well....but I have know the machine to still have sound issues even
after the one bong.

The manual say: Sound / Speech Board Test. A brief check of the
Audio Board circuitry occurs at game turn on. The game reports the
test results with brief sounds.

NO SOUND: Sound / speech board not operating
1 SOUND: System OK
2 SOUNDS: RAM Problem
3 SOUNDS: U4 Problem
4 SOUNDS: U19 problem

There may also be a Sound Diagnostic Switch on the edge of the CPU
board. After pressing this button you should hear 2 test tones that
repeat. The game has to be shut of to reset this test.

Just a quick note. There should defiantly be sound when the ball is
swirling around the spin out after shooting the ball.
