I posted a classified ad on Pittsburgh Craiglist for a chainsaw
carved bench. Price was $1900.00 and weight is probably heavier than
a pinball. I got the following email. Pretty sure its a scam....but
what is going on here? The "buyer" didn't ask any questions about
weight, quality, size etc...After I responded through email that the
bench was still available, here is his email...

Sounds Good

I am okay with the price, my mode of payment will be via Bank
Certified Cashier Check, I will need your full name and address to
make out the Cashier Check. the payments will be mailed through Next
day Express Courier service while you deposit the check for cash after
receipt, the Pickup fee will be included in the payment while you pay
the pickup agent when they meet you for pickup.

I will wait for your bank to verify and clear the check before we
proceed with further arrangements on pick up and shipments. I will
need your name and address for the payments if my offer sounds ok with
you.

Yeah, it's 100% scam, through and through, no doubt. If you are
inclined, play with him a little bit, otherwise ignore him, or call
him a scammer and he will go away.

Should I tell him my terms...you bring $1900.00, I load it into your
truck and you go away or should I just ignore him?

Ignore him. Most likely you'll never see them, but do you really want these
people to know where you live ? No telling what their next scam may be. LTG

I just responded the scammers email. Here it is:
Sounds good to me too. The deal is...you send a pumpkin wagon. When
he arrives, he will give me $30,000 of your money in cash. Once you
receive the bench, let me know. I will send the rest of your money on
a turnip truck Tell him to give me the password which will be
SCAMMER!

Wow you do great work, do you have a website, or a link to photos of
some of your work.

Sounds like the same old garbage, the check might sort of clear ok but
then 10 days later the bank tells you oops, nope it's a bum check.
The red flag is that the only one who seems to be coughing up any
actual cash in the deal is the seller! : \
Ask him if his name is Mugambo Uganda ; )

Yea that seems to be the recent scamming mode. I'm not exactly sure
of the thought process. I've gotten some Nigeria email lately and all
they want is an address. It may be that they are just trying to get
you talking or they may have progressed to regular theft from your
address.

Since more and more people are wise to internet scams, maybe they are
collecting and selling names/addresses of potential suckers to send
them scams printed on paper, naturally a printed scam seems more legit
than another email.

Either that or the whole I'm buying your item scam has a bunch of
potential outcomes that could lead to ripping you off another way,
like with your bank account number that you give them later to 'make
it right' when the check bounces, then they got your personal info to
rip you off somewhere else.

They farm addresses so that they can create "authentic" documents that
require addresses. Part of the scam.

Thanks for the compliment. Did you look at the bench on Craigslist? I
don't have a website right now. I can send some pictures to your
email if you want me to. I have plans to carve an Elvira sometime
soon.

Very cool. Can't believe some lodge or such hasn't grabbed it up!

Thanks. I hate the selling part of anything. All of my other
carvings have been ordered by friends and there has been no problem.
This one will sell to, I just hate the whole process. I would much
rather be carving or playing pinball than dealing with scammers or
waiting for deadbeats to show up only to low ball. I also can't
stand the craft show/fair scene. I do need to get a website....my
wife can deal with the buyers. How do you think this type of thing
would do on ebay? I guess shipping would be the problem there. Maybe
my best bet is trading carvings for pinball machines.

Hey, that is pretty cool!

If I were to try making one of them with a chainsaw, I'm sure I'd be down to
only a few fingers left... and a pile of red sawdust and slivers.

I think you would do better selling these from a website than on ebay - and
skip the ebay fee BS.

Wouldn't take much to setup your own website - coming up with an unused name
is usually the hardest part.
One suggestion if you do look for a website name. If you think you like one
and do an availability check, register it immediately if you want it.
Otherwise, domain squatters will see you looking for it, do a quicky
registration and try to sell it back to you at $1K or more.

Thanks. I own a couple domain names. Bought them thinking somebody
might want them someday. Two years later and nobody has...I could use
those. I just need to take the time to set up a website.
