I hope that's not it, because the ONLY differences I can see between this
layout and Space Jelly is that they took the wireforms off the giant
basketball, and the removed the entrance shot!

I just looked at the SJ Flyer.... It isn't even as complex as Space
Jam (Not that SJ is complex)... Layout is IDENTICAL, but it is
actually missing more than Space Jam is.... Wow, just wow....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but someone told me last month Gary Stern
openly told a crowd at Texas Pinball Festival that the new NBA game
would be the same layout as Space Jam, "dumbed down" for lack of a
better term for the Chinese market and actually produced in China for
China, with just LED scoring (no DMD/cost cutting) along with some
other cost cutting efforts. It was also mentioned that a US version
would have the DMD and be built in Chicago for the US market. Was
anyone at that conversation in Texas in person that can confirm, or
perhaps it's already been reported on here in which case sorry for
wasting your time reading this. ;-)

I was in the crowd at his presentation, and although he did make those
general comments, I don't recall that he actually mentioned a machine
name. Guess you could infer that it was the NBA game, but he didn't say
that - at least he didn't say it during his presentation.

Sports bars might want them ...but then again, if I had a sports bar

about $1000 or so be the way to go? It's not as if the license has
aged....put Stern NBA and NBAFB side by side, and NBAFB probably looks

Hope the disc at least has a magnet like twister.... otherwise a
single spinning disc is just kind of lame IMHO. Since it's just
plopped in the middle of the playfield though, I doubt it. Might
actually be able to find one of these on location since Lebron is on
it. One can hope they put one at the Q or some downtown location
will have one on route.

Yeah, nothing screams modern to me like having Glenn Robinson and Vin
Baker be the team for the Bucks.

NBA Fastbreak *could* have been a lot more timeless had they not stuck
the stars from the 1997 teams on there. It aged like the yearly video
game installment because of that, and is much older feeling
specifically because of that. Don't get me wrong -- I really like the
game, but three months after it came out, it was clearly old.
Hopefully, Stern is a little smarter than that here.

I'm not a fan of Space Jam and I am apprehensive at best about look of
this new game, however if it is truly the design I'll withhold
judgement to see what the software is like.

Having said that, oddly enough there are still a few Space Jams on
route around the Milwaukee area, which means that they did something
right with it if people are still willing to put quarters into it.
Damned if I know what it was, but something I guess worked...

It would have been smarter to just not pay the player's union at all,
make the game about the teams themselves and not mention the players
or do trivia at all unless it was specifically about the game itself
(like "When did the NBA start?" or something). I'll stand up right
now and say it's one of my favorite B/W games because it is, but
making it non-generic made it seem old *so* quickly.

Vin Baker was traded from the Bucks like a month after the game came
out, and arcades around here didn't get it until the summer, so it
seemed like it was out of date the moment I saw it.

As for the rest of it, the NBA Fastbreak cabinet was ugly as all heck,
and the Stern one if it is true is a much more timeless looking thing
than the sorta rainbow cab that NBA Fastbreak had. I think the new
Stern backboxes with the trim look more modern too (the one time I've
seen one with the wooden thing around it, it made it seem even older
to me).

As for the gameplay, I'll withhold judgement until I see it. If the
rules are like Space Jam, then this will be the first Stern game in a
while that I will truly HATE (first since RCT), if the rules are more
advanced to account for stacking of modes and combo shots, I think
this game could be a real winner. The basketball theme hasn't been
explored as much as it could be, and with a unique ruleset I think
this could be a worthy game.

And, if they are going to recycle an old game, it is the only Sega
that I see out on route on a relatively regular basis, so they picked
something that worked for ops, I guess.

Of course not. Not what I said at all. There have been posts in the past
where people thought Stern should build simpler pins. Gottlieb tried it and
failed. Once pins got made with more on them and in them, it's near
impossible to go back and expect it to attract commercial sales or plays.

Looks like a great, simple game for locations. Kobe, LaBron and my
man Dwight on the backglass. Seems like a great idea for a theme that
will attract players. Should bring in some coin for the ops.

It would be a major bonus if its a good player's game too...I'm not

So the game in that pic doesn't exist?

I find it very hard to believe anyone would go to the effort needed to
make that picture look as realistic as it does, just for "practice".
The playfield layout has changed from spacejam (addition of a lane
next to the center scoop, different habitrail setup), the shadows and
lighting are spot-on, glare from the GI lamps looks as it should, the
cross-playfield habitrail has not been shopped in (the edges would
look different), focus and clarity is consistent across the whole
picture, the backboard decal looks detailed, yet blurred because of
distance... the playfield fonts, art and arrows all reflect current
Stern design... the design of the center scoop is changed...

No, that is a real picture of a real machine. Whether it represents
what actually gets built is debatable, but definitely not a 'shop.

You know, you do have a point there Dan. What killed Space Jam for me
wasn't the layout, but its software. To wit, the last time I played
Space Jam in league, I started doing running commentary on my own game...

"31 more tweety shots to multiball!"
"30 more shots to multiball!"
"29 more shots to multiball!"
....
"15 more shots to multiball! HE'S ON FIRE!!"

I finally bricked it when I had 5 or so left. Damn, I was *only* able to
pull off 26 tweety shots in a row! :)

Nicely played sir! Lost In Space Jam, hehe.

As for the Space Jam bashing, it'snot a great game but it's not
horrible either. I had one for awhile and liked it ok. Yea I sold it
but hey I sold GNR too so there. ;-p

I agree with an earlier comment that if the rules are done halfway
decent it could be much more fun than SJ. Some stacking and added high
score lists for BBall pts etc and it could be ok.

The sound really brought SJ down with that lame single backbox speaker
and somewaht uninspired audio. I learned to like it a bit on pinmame
and the sounds were much better that way than when you play the actual
pin. So if any programmers are reading this try like hell to make the
sound package worthwhile. I know their hands are tied to a point but
sheesh some of these recent titles music/sounds/voices are awful.
Really drags a game down IMO.

As for fakery, some have been saying on the group here they were doing
an NBA game and also there was talk of recycling a layout so this fits
the bill on both counts and looks pretty legit to me.

Better theme, I couldn't stand that movie - despite being a huge fan
of both NBA basketball and Looney Tunes. Plus the PF artwork looks
brighter and more like a basketball court. Yes it is basically the
same game, but I know which one I'd rather play/own.

Kids were boy 12, girl 13 and boy 14.
I have Stingray, Xenon, EBD, SWE1, Gorgar, Buck Rogers, Vegas, Orbitor
1, Banzai Run, RCT, Bad Cats, TFTC and Sopranos in the house and
playable.

Vegas got the most play by a mile.
They couldn't get enough of it.
Especially the wife and daughter.
The 2 boys are hardcore console gamers, too.
I'd say Vegas has a 'medium' level of pf 'crowded-ness'.

I'm actually surprised to see Stern can afford to pick a theme that
simply won't sell in Europe. If they are aiming for China I wish them
all the best, but such a Space Jam remake won't work in Europe. From
the other posts I understood SJ is still to be found on location in
USA, so why would an op buy a new game if he still has SJ around? The
choice for this theme is, and stripping SJ, is completely weird to
me.

However I did like NBA FB. Still this is probably the biggest
recycling game I've seen around. Spinner like TNMT, SJ layout, that
ugly diverter that was used in earlier games, and counting the 'mode'
inserts: very few modes with the ultimate goal to reach the finals. I
fear an IJ4 software debacle: 70 more shot needed for multiball, hit
switches for jackpot, ...

Answer me this: can Stern afford to lose the European market? Or have
they lost it already long time ago?

That's not really "animation" in the sense of Roger Rabbit and Space

With rare exceptions, I haven't found many games that have layouts
that kill the game for me. It's almost exclusively software that
kills the game. SJ didn't have a bad layout, it just had gameplay
*exactly* like you described.

While it isn't as big as soccer, I was under the impression that
Europe had a strong basketball system. Hell, it was just a few months
ago I think that there were rumors that LeBron James might sign with a
European team when his US contract was up because basketball was
becoming a more lucrative market in Europe than what the US could pay.

Maybe it gets re-skinned to reflect European teams and players?

I have no doubt those pictures are accurate. Gary Stern started saying
he was going to simplify games almost a year ago. He fired his most
creative game designer and software designer. The writing was on the
wall. 24 threw everyone off because it was delayed a year. This is the

As far as an NBA pin it makes sense...EVEN IF WE DONT LIKE IT.....

He can sell these with different translights to players and rabid fans

Let's give it time to see what really comes of it. It could signal
something absolutely horrible. Or, it could signal a cheap pin to get
them positioned to enter China, and they could be lowering US
production but still producing regular games for the US. Shrek worked
out just fine as a re-theme of Family Guy with different art but the
same basic rules. This gives us the chance to get totally new rules.

Although the early result worries me a bit since I hated the original
game, until we see a remake of X-Files, I'm not that concerned. They
can't recycle too many old playfields I think...

NBA fastbreak is awesome. I know it does not get much love, but I
think it's timeless and has well implemented gameplay and sound
calls. The only thing that dates it is the players on the backglass.
I think it's a great game. I hope a Stern version could be as good or

This all smells of the WMS approach, instead of having two products
they bid on one Pin2K and lost. Like Gomez said in his topcast

Sure you want simple, make'em but don't stop the current line, at

Unless the right ramp becomes a jump ramp (and it looks all plastic),
I don't see there being any other way to make that shot.
