Hurricane does not get a lot of love on the group, but I quite like
mine and did this retrofit to it. OK, it's not as cool as a TZ third
magnet retrofit, but the cost is a lot cheaper (just a few $$ and a few
hours).

The sample Hurricane games came with lamps in the pop bumpers, but
production models later came with no lamps in the pop bumpers. On the
sample games, the pop bumper lamps are controlled by the CPU, so you
get good playfield effects (Jackpot is great), and not just lamps on
all the time. I have a production game, but having played a sample
game I wanted to retrofit the pop bumper lamps.

I thought I would document what I did in case anybody else wants to do
it or wants to know what is involved. It is a simple task and you will
need a few hours.

Parts you will need:

3x pop bumper lamp holders and 3 x 555 lamps
3x 1N4004 diodes
3x metal playfield wire mounts - not sure what they are called, but
these are the small metal parts that screw into the playfield that
usually have the diodes attached to them.
3x short 1 / 4 inch hex head screws
Heat shrink tubing
Cable ties

The Lamp matrix is shown on page 3-4 of the manual and it is lamp
numbers 65, 66 and 67 that are being retrofitted.

First, you will need to install the new lamps and lamp holders. For
this, the Comet (centre) ramp will need to be removed, then the bumper
caps, then you can push the leads through, put the lamps in and
reinstall everything topside.

Underneath the playfield, you need to install the usual pop bumper
lighting set up.
first pull the wires through and put heat shrink tubing on them where
they get close to the pop bumper brackets.

You need to join one of the lamp leads from each of the 3 pop bumpers
together - you should join the three together that are closest to the
centre of the 3 pop bumpers. These wires then need to be joined to
column 6 (yellow / green wire) - the easiest way to do this is to
connect a wire to the yellow / green wire at lamp 68 - dunk the
dummy. Staple the wires to the playfield as you go.

Then for each of the of the pop bumpers, solder the non banded end of a
1N4004 diode to the lamp lead and the banded end to the metal playfield
wire mounts and screw the wire mounts into the playfield.

All that is left to do is connect a wire from each of these 3 mounts to
appropriate places in the wiring loom.

Left pop bumper needs to be connected to red/green. There is a
red/green wire in the loom that goes across the underside of the
playfield about level with the dunk the dummy target - splice in
there.

For the other two pop bumpers, there is a 4 way connector just to the
right of the bottom pop bumper which goes to the Hurricane ramp 1
million and 2 million lamps. You can splice into the loom near this 4
way connector - red/blue goes to the right pop bumper and red/violet
goes to the bottom pop bumper.

Then use the cable ties to tidy up and enjoy!

Just a clarification - when I wrote "staple the wires to the playfiled
as you go, i meant the lamp holder wires, not the ones that go to the
loom.

And email me directly if you want some pics.

I bought a Hurricane a year or so ago and found that mine had the lights and
wires, but were never connected to anything.
Thinking that it was kinda strange to have Bulbs, Sockets and Wiring, but
not be hooked up.
I too got to looking at the Lamp Matrix and decided to hook them up and see
what happened.
Reading this thread, it made me think that I had made a short video to show
what the lights looked like, so I went to my web page and sure enough it was
there.
You can see the Hurricane Pop Bumper Lights in action at

First link on the left.
If anyone else would like to help host this video so my ISP won't go nuts,
feel free.

Enjoy,
