Well I hope that company crumbles and dies at their own hands. I will
not be giving them another cent of my money. I have been a member since
94. I have been forced to pay their ever increasing fee's, forced to
accept paypal as the only methods of payment and now my money is being
held for 21 days or until I ship the product. Customer lives in Ia and
wants to pick it up. He is now going to be mad that has as to wait
until the 12th of Nov . Wow, No way I am shipping an expensive piece of
equipment to someone so they can dispute the transaction.

Your a real dummy if you stuck with FleeBay for 7 years (not likely
since 1994 since Pierre started it in 1995 in his living room).

i sold about 20 items on ebay this last couple months. (Liquidating my
toy collection to buy a new pin). I also was very frustrated by the 21
day thing and the new fees. But in the end I only got burned once ;)
one item sold for 600. Now over a month later I get negative feedback
because he thought I overcharged for shipping. (I did to cover the extra
insurance) and in probably over 10,000 pcs. of lego a couple were
missing. ugh...
Also it appears you can't leave negative feedback for non-paying
bidders. If there never send money you can't comment on a transaction.

What is the 21 day thing?

I agree Ebay and PP are doing a HORRIBLE job for sellers. Its
unbalanced.

Some dolt bought a $40 item from me, the guy decided he didnt want it
(and lied about not receiving another item). No consideration to me
from PP or ebay, they refunded him with the funds from my account.
Sure Its small peanuts, but the whole process made me feel like i was
the out to cheat this idiot.. Add to that i cant leave the guy any
feedback, yet he can to me. Terrible terrible system right there.

I had a few PP big sales recently (3k+) and i am anxious - what if the
buyer decides "they dont want it" on an item i clearly mark "AS IS NO
REFUNDS?". Ebay and PP don't care what i have to say and i am
completely open to trouble.

Yet.... they have a monopoly. The Ebay exposure is really incredible -
items that i couldnt get anything for on msg boards get noticed.

PP there is no faster way to close a deal.

Knowing how their system works, and the law of averages dictates that
eventually i will run into an A HOLE, I know i will end up regretting
using them (as a seller).

Welcome to Ebay/Paypal, folks. I know how you feel as I used to sell
guitars and someone in Canada would buy one and then the hold would be
placed until 21 days, proof of delivery or positive feedback. However
once I crossed 100 Positive feedbacks the holds no longer happen. I go
to the ATM and get my $ immediately (or up to the daily limit anyway).

I was also told I may wait as many as 21 days for the payment to be
released.
It was just about a week before it came through. Paypal looks at your
history to decide whether to release the funds earlier. The more
transactions, the sooner the money comes.

I just did research on this 21 day thing - looks like its been around
since '08 but just starting to get used.

Guys with 100 percent feedback, hundreds of transactions, getting
slapped with 21 day holds because of unusual activity (they don't sell
as often as Ebay thinks they should?).

WTF? For some, Ebay is to be used whenever you need to sell something
no patterns needed...someone should stage an Ebay walk out.

I've never had to wait for my $$ fortunately. I have been selling
casually for 10+ years so maybe that has something to do with it. I also
have a separate bank account set aside just for PayPal and empty my
PayPal account and my bank account as soon as I get a payment. Anything
bad happens and the account gets closed instantly (assuming it's not
just a few dollars I guess).

I remember back in the good old wild & wooly Ebay days - you could leave
a feedback for anyone at any time... no transaction required. You could
do a search to see who had bid on an item (saved you time in searching
once you found a sucker who bids early), Paypal's motto was "forever
free" (right.) AND, Paypal gave you $5.00 for every person who signed up
via your link.
Oh, the money was flowing free & easy back then. It seemed that
EVERYTHING that I put up sold, & sometimes for a staggering amount.

I sell items on eBay all the time and never once had the 21 day hold.
Not sure if this is because I have close to 300 transactions or if
it's because I have been selling for 12 years. I also have a separate
bank account set aside just for PayPal like Jesse does. Over the past
few months I sold 19 items for a over 5k and the most expensive item
was 3.3k. YMMV but I never haven't had any issues recently.

Agreed, I have sold many high end collectibles some worth $2-3K each and
I have even sold 2 cars on Ebay, all went smoothly with no holds or
hiccups. The one or two problems I have had have been with overseas
buyers but Ebay sided with me and told them to piss off. Even with that
I would never stop selling overseas, they spend anywhere from 15-50%
more on an item due to currency exchanges and limited availability on
some of the items I tend to sell.

Yeah, I do not understand people who do not ship overseas. By not
allowing worldwide bidding, you have just cut out 90% of the potential
bidders on an item. Foolish, in my opinion.

You already do regret using them as a seller without being screwed over
by an A-Hole. Running into an asshole buyer that lies and then gets
paid back for being an asshole is just shit-flavored icing on your

flavor of it already.

I have been off Ebay for about 15 months now. I was on for 10 years,
had well over 1000 positive feedbacks and a 100% rating. I generated
tens of thousands of revenue for them. I sold a large $40 item to a
guy with 2 feedbacks. I sent the item, he said he received an empty
box and had the PO send the box back to me. He filed the dispute with
Ebay and Paypal. I showed them the shipping receipt that showed that a
4 lb item was shipped. They sided with him, told me they were
suspending my account till I paid them $40 (I clean out my Paypal bank
account as soon as $ hits).

Last week, I went back to them, reminded them of the $ they didn't
make off me in the last year, and said I'd come back if they'd
reinstate my account. They said "No thanks".

F them.

Once called it the 'net gain ATM' (not ass to mouth, but it might have
been) money machine back then. By 2002'ish Meg Co. began a series of
policy/event changes that turned many people away.

The reason nobody cares at Ebay is because they've grown into a
corporation, they are only beholden to their share holders. So the
bottom line is they do what they want to do.

Also they've made it really clear that they don't want any used items on
the site, or small sellers. The way they prove this is by offering huge
discounts to the larger sellers, and making return policies that only
make sense if you're selling in extreme bulk. They want to be like
Amazon, if you go to their site they've made many many changes to
imitate the Amazon model.

What it comes down to is this: They are what they are, they aren't going
to change for the better, or change back to what they were. You need to
find a way to manipulate their model, or your model, to a place where
you can make money off of it. If you can't find a way to do that, then
you're better off without them. Lots of people are still making money
on Ebay, you just have to bite the bullet and decide if you want to do
business like that or not.

So you (assumingly) don't purchase insurance, yet when there is a
problem you shouldn't have to pay for it? eBay clearly states that
the seller is responsible for the item until it reaches the buyer in
the condition as described in the auction. It doesn't matter if the
buyer lied or if the PO damaged/stole it, you're still responsible.
If you only had one of these cases in 10 years, consider yourself
lucky. Bad buyers and shipping problems are present in every
business, not just eBay.

I hate to say it but that is possible, the USPS and UPS beat the hell
out of packages, the USPS has them roll along these conveyers and the
boxes often fall off. In the past year alone I've had the post office
deliver nothing but an empty box or shreds of what remained of a box
twice. At least five more times I received a box that was repackaged
by the post office.

I had $200,000 in book sales on ebay last year, and another 75,000 on
the Amazon marketplace, and both places greatly favor the buyer in any
dispute. Amazon at least doesn't waste much time pretending to review
the case, they side with the buyer right away and that's that. I hate
not having control in this side of my business but what can you do,
you have to have tough skin and take these losses when they happen as
part of CODB. If I give up ebay and Amazon, I would have to find some
slot in a corporate office and work 9-5, as I don't get near the
exposure with simply my own website and walkin traffic is nothing like
it use to be.

And ebay and paypal are no fools, they have legions of lawyers to
advise them on precisely these matters and if ebay doesn't side with
the buyer the buyer can file a claim with their credit card company
and ebay will eat the amount if they side with the seller. The 21 day
thing I'm sure is for their protection and I imagine there have been
scams where buyer/seller colluded to scam ebay or paypal.

Ive been saying this for years. As long as Ebay goes unchallenged by
another major auction site. They will continue with this kind of BS. I
wish there was a big shot out there with a large enough bankroll that
would start another auction site and start attacking all the stupid
crap that ebay does like this and start stealing users to become a
real international competitor of online auction services.

I agree this is the only way really. But, a Start up getting that
momentum / traction / trust is a TALL order.

I wouldnt mind more sites to search, its part of the fun. Right now,
besides CL and these boards, the only other is Ebay.

The only thing we can hope is that Ebay pulls a Netflix of some kind,
where they lose more client trust, forcing opportunity for spin off
sites masses are willing to use. That could level the playing field.

I wonder what the deal is with Craigslist. They have a somewhat
trusted name. If they could do a nationwide engine, they would give us
exactly what we need - a face to face means, deal at your own risk.
Lots of exposure would cut right into Ebay.

No, no insurance. Sure, I could have bought it, but that wasn't my
point. My point was that Ebay is dumb, shooting themselves in the
foot, and so blindly sides with buyers that it drives away sellers. My
"buyer" had two weeks of track record with Ebay. I had 10 years of
impeccable track record...sold dozens of pins, a $50,000 car, all
kinds of stuff. The fees to them for one $2500 pin I sell run $200-
$250 including Paypal fees. But after generating, say, $10,000 in fees
for them, they actually fire me for a $40 item? They give zero
consideration to 10 years and 1000 feedbacks and a couple thousand
transactions and side with a guy they've known for two weeks?

You're just not going to get logic out of Ebay. Nobody there has the
power to do anything to help you anyways. Most small companies have a
John Wayne somewhere who can do something just 'cuz. Nobody at Ebay can
do something just 'cuz. If you violated some b.s. policy they have, it
doesn't matter how many feedback you have, or how long you've been with
them, or any of that, they're going to side with the buyer every time.

They will never have competition, unless Google which now owns Yahoo
gets in on it. Yahoo ran some auctions in the past and failed (although
I hear they are bigger than Ebay in Japan). I suppose maybe Apple could
do it too, but I mean you're going to need a HUGE company to throw the
money necessary at it, to topple Ebay.

ONCE THAT HAPPENS, the new company will have the exact same problems
Ebay does, possibly worse, just because that's the nature of
Corporations. I'm not anti-corporations, I'm just saying that's how
they think. There's no consideration on a case by case basis, they make
policies and then stick to them no matter how stupid it is, because if
anybody strays from policy they're going to get fired.

Agree with this - the possibility of fraud ruins the post sale process
for everyone.

But, Ebay's strength is NOT in the sale process itself (clearly :)).
Its in the exposure your item is given. Many times i have listed items
on Msg boards that wouldnt sell, Ebay ALWAYS sells at price (and even
then some!).

That is why a Nationwide engine, without a formal sales process in
place is needed - exactly like CL but at a nation level. Think of it
like this:

-- Those selling in bulk will stick with Ebay / Amazon. On the Pin
side, those sellers can list their pins at Retail pricing.
-- Those selling locally only stick with CL.
-- Those that want the nation coverage that can handle the sales
process themselves use this "new" service.

When one searches for an item, they can check all three. The new
service could potentially take ALOT away from Ebay. Even instill an
auction like capacity. If the winner negs out, go to next in line,
etc. But the post sales process is just like CL - face to face, no
policing. Let the users run the operation.

It would work, i cant see why not. In fact, its how Ebay USED TO be.

The only catch is gaining ground with something like that, takes time.
The history of CL is probably the best example of how to gain that
recognition.

Right there - is a million dollar idea :)

Just need a spark to get that going, CL would be perfect for it, its a
trusted name. Not sure why they are localized, dont know the history
or make up of the company enough to know.
