Prep for PINBOT light grid overlay

Guys: Picked up a $300 dollar pinbot a few weeks ago and it's in great
shape except for the light grid area which has it's usual wear. I
bought classic arcade's overlay but need help with prep and install.

I am not clearcoating the playfield afterwords (unless it is advisable
to spot clearcoat just the overlay area).

How should I be prepping the grid area prior to applying the grid decal?

I contacted Jeff at Classic Arcades and he said to sand the area, then
apply a coat of lacquer. THEN apply the overlay.

Anyone?
