I just got back from the Chicago Coin Op Show, spent the weekend there
and really think the old Coke and Pepsi machines looked totally cool
when they are restored. Are there any that can be functional with
standard 12 oz cans? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would look around in your area. Seems like machines in working order
are for sale everywhere. I would personally just go for a decent
working one. If you want to fully restore it later, & have the big $$
go for it.

My buddy got a decent vendo 67 for $500, & just picked up a big double
chest coke cooler for $250.

My father worked for a Pepsi bottler in the early 90's. When he left
the company they gave us a Vendo 128. Not sure if it is the first can
machine, but it was early enough to have a can open built in as it was
pre pop tab. Big sucker that was heavy as sin, but it never gave a
problem.

Recently I had a Dr. Pepper Vendolator bottle machine.I forgot the
designation. Anyhow the racks can be adjusted so that you can fit a
can in height wise. There are inserts that go on the rack to set the
depth. (Different size bottles) The trick is where you pull the bottle
out. You could remove the hardware that retains the bottle.

Personally you should be looking for the non vending versions. They
aren't worth as much, but from the exterior are identical just sans
coin mechs. Inside they are just a set of racks in a vending machine
shell. They would have been used in grocery stores much like the
fridges near the check out lanes. This is one of the larger versions,
but you get the idea. http://cgi.ebay.com/320681801868#ht_500wt_1156

Chad, in my limited experience, the Vendo 44 is the most collectible
of the vending machines...it is a real small footprint, easy to
service, with tons and tons of parts available. It vends only one
selection, the 6.5 ounce bottle, but I THINK there is an adapter for
12 oz cans for that model and I know there are can adapters for many
other models. I had a 44 and it is cool and very classic, but i
preferred a cavalier (model ??) i had that vended about 12 selections
of bottles from a narrow door behind which you could see the bottle
caps of the bottle and pull one out. I am not home tonite, but I am
99% sure I have a neat book on coke machines that i'll send you if you
want. i'll let you know tomorrow evening. joe

That would be great. I can send it right back in a few weeks after I
read it.

Wurlitzer makes a repro "Vendo 44" which will handle cans or bottles up

Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, I've got a Cavalier 72 that I
love. It's a round-top, multi-vend machine that will take 12oz
bottles and can be adapted for cans. It's my favorite when you want
both beauty and functionality.

Agreed. My favorite beverages are in bottles, so I have a Vendorlator
90 (ten selections), but the Cavalier 72 is much better looking.
