Figured I'd share my experience with this. Basically, the coil in the
ball launch is a 23-800 and I always had a problem with the ball being
launched not making it around the loop upon launch. I would constantly
adjust this. Sometimes it would work and many times it would not. It
was frustrating. We'll here's the fix.I read a post on RGP about
changing the plunger armature to A-17767 plunger and make sure the
proper coil sleeve (03-7067-5)
is installed. Well, this works. The plunger is the same type used in a
Getaway and other machines. It has a recess to it and then you adjust
the coil bracket so that the recess is actually cupping the ball
properly. Every single shot works perfectly even in multiball. I
strongly urge AFM owners to do this. It works flawlessly. Thought I'd
share my experience with this fix.

John - Thanks for sharing. I (and everyone else) enjoy when folks
follow up with their resolutions to problems. I remember your earlier
post (to which I added my 2 cents) and had been wondering....

Good job!

BTW - Where did you end up buying your parts?

Hi Matt,

I got the parts from Pinball Resource. I played many games of AFM
yesterday and the operation of the plunger is soooo much smoother it's
unbelievable. If Steve Young doesn't have the actual part number I
listed above, they will supply a cross which is the same part, just
different part number.

I have both the plungers ($6) and the sleeves in stock.

As always, thanks Dave! Turns out my local Mazzco (now Happ) has the
sleeve and plunger locally......

John - Happen to have a picture to post, or send, of how your mod
looks? May help someone in the future.....

No mod really. All it takes is putting a new sleeve in the existing
23-800 coil and swapping the plunger with the one currently in side the
coil. Adjust the plunger so recessed part of the plunger touches the
center of the ball and that's it. Walk away and play. You'll be amazed
at how much better the ball travels.

Hey John - Here's my follow up.....

My AFM never exhibited the same problem yours did, however, there were
times where a launch would seem weak occasionally. So I got a new coil
sleeve and the different plunger. After looking this new plunger over,
I agree that it is a better design than what comes with the game. Since
it's so simple to swap out, I went ahead and did it.

Now the results have been similar to what I had before, again not
having the problem you had, however, I can clearly see that this new
plunger will likely eliminate weak launches - even if they occur
occasionally. The ball simply sits right in place, and launches
straight. A long term prognosis is in order, but I would agree that AFM
owners should do this, what amounts to a mod, for their games - I can't
see any downfall, only improvement......
