I am in the midst of my first playfield swap, and so far so good!! My Eight
Ball Deluxe is closer to being the the jewel of my collection.
So, everything is removed from the old playfield and I am at the point of
needing a spool of ground braid and a stapler to attach it. I will likely be
doing a couple more playfields after this one, so buying a stapler makes
sense.
I have seen recommendations for $100 air staplers...and I'm sure they work
just dandy....but that seems like a fairly steep investment in a tool that
isn't terribly versatile and honestly won't get used THAT much. What has
everyone else used? I have found some other less expensive options.

Also, the ground braid seem pretty pricey at $50 for 100 ft. Any reason this
wouldn't work just the same?

Thanks for the input!

Don't they make staplers with a long reach neck or whatever it's called? It
would be good for replacing pop bumper lights on populated playfields where
you have no room.

Are you refering to the ground braid in the cabinet and the backbox,
or the bare wire
that is stapled to the bottom of the playfield?
That one isn't ground, it supplies voltage to the lights, ground is
enabled by the MPU
for feature lights, and the return for GI lights.
The bare twisted wire is available from McMasters, I believe.

If you will do more than one or two games over the years - buy the
stapler. It makes things like pop bumper swaps so much easier.

Chris,

I have been doing playfield swaps for 30 years. If you completely
remove EVERYTHING from the underside of the playfield and install
ground braid first, then you can get buy with an old Arrow brand-type
stapler where there are no obstacles. If you have to install/repair
any ground braid while there are assemblies on the playfield then I
would strongly recommend investing in a Unicatch 2238 LONG NOSE
stapler. You will need an air supply, though. Buy one off eBay buy-
it-now from the guy in California for $65. He usually includes about
5,000 3/8" crown staples 1/4" long, which is just what you need. The
stapler is amazing and will give you professional appearing results
effortlessly.

If you want your work to look just like the original then you will
have to buy "braided" wire. If you don't care and just need a ground
wire, then buy a 1/4# spool of bare tinned copper wire from McMaster-
Carr. I forget the exact gauge. You can figure that out. Something
like 20 or 18. This is what they used on old EM's by the way.

Do they make a manual long nose stapler that you don't need air to use?

Per Otis' reply, I purchased the Unicatch Stapler he refers to from
the same guy, John Vallejo, in CA. The stapler can be found at
http://stores.homestead.com/SecureFasteningSystems/-strse-73/Unicatch-Long-Nose-Upholstery/Detail.bok
I had also purchased the staples from this gentleman as well and the
total came to 88.50 with shipping. The stapler was easy to use and the
price, IMO, was very reasonable.

Regarding the "ground braid" you can go to http://www.pinrestore.com/Supplies.html
and either purchase it by the 50' spool, which is recommended if
you're going to do future projects, or you can also purchase by the
foot. When I did my machine I measured the braid on the existing
playfield and added 5 feet to make sure I had enough.

Good luck!

I know it seems like overkill to get the air compressor and the pneu
stapler but you do, you will wonder how you got along without these
tools before. I use my air compressor at least once a week. Fill
tires, blow out/off parts, paint, and of course run air tools.

In addition to installing pop bumper wires and ground braid I've used
the stapler to recover boat seats and trailer bunks and I just got it
this Summer. Anything the old hand stapler can do this tool will do
better and easier.

If you don't have a garage to work in it would be almost impossible to
have these tools, but if you have a litle room it's well worth it.

I totally agree with you Dave. I have found many uses for my air
compressor. I primarily bought it to spray paint via a HVLP gun,
airbrush and to staple ground braid but I also use it for inflating
tires and I blow out all of my sanders after using them.

That stapler is one of my favorite tools. Reinstalling pop bumpers is
super easy now.

Ditto Dave and Hugh. An air compressor is too useful to not have.
Smaller single stage units are relatively cheap. I use the heck out of
mine including stapling.

You're not allowed to call yourself a REAL man unless you have an air

Add me to the list of satisfied customers of John Vallejo and the
UNicatch long nose stapler. He lives 15 minutes away from me so I was
able to meet him and pick up the stapler in person. A nice guy, a nice
stapler, and a nice price ($65 w/o staples or shipping). If you will
do more than one PF swap, or have multiple pop bumpers to rebuild, get
a long nose stapler. As far as the air compressor being required in
order to qualify for a "man card", I agree, but only because I have a
compressor already. ;) Speaking of compressors, if you have the room
and some money, get the belt driven, oil needing variety as they are
MUCH quieter than the cheaper "oil free" variety, and then you should
have the ability to run an HVLP spray rig as well when you refinish
your cabs. I'm always willing to spend other people's money.

This is why I like RPG. I have been wondering and looking for both
the braid and long nose stapler that was not a fortune for a while. I
cound not find this discussed on old posts. Anyway, thanks to all of
you for answering the questions and providing the links. I just
ordered the stapler :) Now to get the compressor. I am not a real
man yet apparently. I am thinking Harbor Freight.

In case anyone is wondering.....
The electric Harbor Freight stapler doesn't work with the short (1/4")
staples.
The 18/1 ground braid from Home Depot is an exact match to the factory stuff
(the skinny stuff under the playfield) other than being copper colored, and
not the silver finish that the machine came with.
250 ft roll was about $13.

You can't punch staples into the cabinet without a pneumatic tool. I
have both a manual and electric Arrow stapler and all it does is fold
the staples over on themselves. Get a compressor off of CL or at HF and
get the Unicatch 2238AL.

OK, so I stepped up for the fancy long-nose air stapler. It showed up
today....so far so good.
Seeing as how I needed a few other things at Home Depot, figure I will get
the appropriate staples (22 gauge, 3/8" crown, 1/4" long)....no dice! Now I
am racking my brain as to where I will find these staples?
Will I be paying $10 shipping for a $5 box of staples online? Do any of the
pinball suppliers sell the, so I may combine some other stuff in an order??
Help!!

Are there none on amazon with free shipping over $25?

Greenacarina

Good idea. I can usually find something on Amazon to pad an order.
BUT......here is my dilemma. My understanding of how staples are sized- the
gauge is the diameter of wire used (22 being smaller than 18, etc...), the
crown is the width (3/8" in this case....which matches my new stapler), then
the length (1/4" for stapling to the back of my playfield)
I ran into this frustration at Home Depot and now another variation with
Amazon. Home Depot had staples down to as small as 18 gauge, then a bunch
that were sized "T25" "T50", etc....
How does T50 related to 22 gauge, 18 gauge, etc? Whoever came up with that
one is an idiot.
So here I am shopping on Amazon and I come up with this-
http://www.amazon.com/Eagle-71-06-4-Inch-Galvanized/dp/B00002267U/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1317702077&sr=8-10
I am getting closer for sure....but does the 3/8" here refer to the crown or
the length? Either way there seems to be some information missing.
It's always the small things in life that "should be simple" that frustrate
me the most! Why complicate things that don't need to be complicated????
Grrrrr!

22 gauge is a 3/8 in crown(width) so any 22 gauge staple you get will be
3/8". The larger the number the smaller the width measurement will be
but they will always be the same width in a given gauge. Just shop for
anything in 22ga with the length you want. The ones you posted will work
fine.

Ohh and the "T" sizes are generally for the Arrow brand manual staplers
not for powered staplers so use the real ones that are designed for
pneumatic staplers or you'll get them jammed up.

Anyway, hope this helps.
