Sourceforge.net is having awards for open source software.

I'd like Netrek to be among the finalists.

So if you have a sourceforge or openid account, please go to
http://sourceforge.net/community/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/nominate.html

and nominate Name: Netrek, URL: http://www.netrek.org as "best
project for gamers"

Why Netrek is a good candidate:

It's the original Internet Open Source game: the first TCP/IP based
game to ever have source posted. It's been used as prior art to
block patents, allowing innovation in gaming. It pioneered
metaservers,
digitally signed binaries, persistent user accounts, using UDP for
speed and TCP for reliability, and player teams and league
competition.

It's got twenty years of open source development history, and can
trace its design roots back thirty-five years, to PLATO Empire. It's
got
clients on all major platforms; you can even still download old
Solaris, IRIX, and AIX binaries, and they'll play.

You can play it forever and still be learning; like Chess or Go,
this isn't a game you master in a few months and forget about; there
are current players who've been continuously active for a decade or
more.

Even after twenty years, the game isn't standing still. In just
the
past two or three years, 50fps code rolled out, a new-from-scratch
Mac client came out (with a very different UI), code was added
to allow team captains to draft players for clue games, and people
have
recently discussed doing an XBox variant.

Finally, it's a really good game. You have to be able to both
think and react, it needs tactical and strategic awareness, teamwork
and communications. It has multiple roles for players with different
strengths and styles. It's graceful; people hang out in observer
mode just to watch.
