I propose that a few of us working on *original* games get
together and form an association to promote our games, to
share resources (knowledge and money or other supplies
to fuel projects beneficial to the members.)

If all members agreed to promote each other's games, you
have a situation (I think) where it is possible to pool a lot
of resources, including management personnel, public
relations, play testers and so on. Way, way, way back when
I first got into mudding I worked on a group of about 3 games.
Each game had original areas and lots of original code being
worked on. All of the admin were friends and gave accounts
to the builders of every other game in the group. I'm not
saying we need to go that far, but that atmosphere of
cooperation allowed for the implementor of any of the games
to get a lot of useful feedback from the admin and builders of
the other games.

Anyhow, if you can pool management resources, and by
management here I mean anybody in a position to manage
game or game play (this may include "wizards" or whatever
you call them on your game.) then having 24 hour, 7 days
a week online support for players isn't a problem even for
the smallest game. You simply ask for management from
some other games to help watch your game during the times
when you aren't available. In fact it might be desirable to
have a meta mud command center. Ha. A single location
where users can manage several games simultaneously.
Not that I feel like coding it, I'm just saying ;)

Perhaps such an association will be most appealing to original
muds that are still in development, but I thought I'd put it on the
table and see what admin think.
