visit Ancient Anguish. Ancient Anguish is an LPMud, running 3.02@285
(Native Mode) with a very custom mudlib.

Ancient Anguish is a very large community which has remained
consistently popular since its inception in February 1992. It is run
on it's own dedicated high speed machine, and enjoys a T1 link to the
Net. Ancient Anguish is a very social mud, averaging 150 to 175 players
online at peak hours, and rarely falling below 60 in the off hours. We
have over 4,000 player logins every day.

In addition to the traditional pursuits of slaying monsters and
exploring the realm, we also run social games of Trivia, Stars,
Yahtzee, and Scavenger Hunts frequently. Multiplayer Poker and
Chess can be enjoyed at any time. In the library, players can
find a large and diverse range of reading material, including mud
histories, fiction, fairy tales, mud programming guides, and more.

Ancient Anguish has a very rich environment, possessing a very
detailed and consistent World theme and living history. New areas for
adventure are scrutinized with very careful attention to detail and must
adhere to strict 'describe all' standards so that each room helps to
immerse you in textual virtual reality. Ancient Anguish has a much
larger and more varied environment than most other muds, and many players
have played for years without seeing all there is to see and doing all
there is to do.

Ancient Anguish has a firm committment to creating a balanced game, where
every player will find the game challenging and fair at all levels of
experience. You will never find immortals granting favouritism to mortal
players, every character must advance by his or her own work and toil.

Players may choose from one of five races, each with their own strengths
and weaknesses. There are multiple social guilds which players may join,
including:

- The Knights of Drin, a chivalrous brotherhood loyal to the King of the
Realm
- The knights' anarchic adversaries, the Scythe Clan
- The wholly evil and corrupt Courts of Chaos, who specialize in the dark
arts of magic
- The good and peaceful Monks of Antana, a friendly and sociable bunch
- The high elven Eldar, a band of fiercely loyal and close friends
- The naturalistic guild of the Black Bear who call on the forces of nature
- and the thieving Raven, who sneak in the back alleys and cause mischef

Ancient Anguish also allows players to choose from one of eight character
professions, including:

- The generic Adventurer, who looks for a more specialized profession
- The pious Cleric, who calls on her diety for healing and wrath
- The bold Fighter, who specializes in combat with all weapons

- the evil Necromancers, who perform dark rituals and raise the dead
- The professions of the Mage, which includes three specialist classes
(the Transmuter, the Conjurer, and the Invoker) and have over 50
detailed spells to draw upon
- The good and chivalrous Paladin, the mounted holy warriors of the realm
- Those who live off the land, the Rangers who make their own equipment
and tame wild beasts
- The chaotic Rogue, who hides in the shadows and liberate the possessions
of others

Ancient Anguish is a very expansive community with so many exciting
activities

Try
renting a rowboat and fishing on the open sea. Explore the haunted manor
and
discover its secrets. Take a coach ride to the mighty palace of King Drin,
ruler
of the Realm. Play a game of chess with another player in the treehouse in
the
park. Compete with other power players for a prime spot on the top
player's
list. Concentrate on exploring the realm and visiting the 90+
wizard-created
areas on a 5,000 location physical map. Deliver messages and packages for
a
quick buck. Invest in local and distant trade routes and play the market
to
live a rags-to-riches fantasy. Adventure with a group of other players.
Hunt
down criminals for a profit. Solve one of the 17 challenging quests.
Socialize
with a hundred other players. Become a wizard and learn mud programming in
our
educational system, and help create new expansions for the world. There is
