Stupid spoiler question, I know, but hey.

Someone recently put in an Angband post that the potions of raise stat
appear at 800'. Well, shoot, I just decided to go down to 850' with my
lev 28 ranger (I know, too cautious, but hey, no save file ;-), and now
I'm wondering if I missed the bill?

No the original posting was wrong, potions of charisma start appearing
at around 1000ft and the other stats gains are spread out around the 1500ft
mark. In practice, i find around 1600-1700ft is a good depth.

I think you may be refering to my post. I mentioned that once you get down
to 800'+, you start to find objects which can raise stats, i.e. weaker artifact
armor, some weapons, rings, etc. Maybe it was just me, but thats when I
started finding +stat items. It was deeper that I found the +stat potions.
By 2000', I'm maxed out in all stats.

BTW, to players still above 2000'. Be careful. The monsters get MUCH harder
real fast. I'm at 2050' and each trip down I'm usually fighting for my
life each trip. It's lotsa fun though. :)

First, just because something _can_ appear on a level doesn't mean that it
will.

Second, you'll need to go farther down than that to find the good ones. I've
got a 25th level high-elf ranger running around at 1250ft and falling (got
_really_ lucky and got a ring of speed plus a ton of special weapons/armour at
1000ft) and all I've gotten was 4-5 charisma potions, two strength, and a
dex out of a couple dozen trips or so. All I've seen recently have been restore
potions.

Well either they or you are confused about the depth of gain stat
potions. The actual depths are:
1000ft - Charisma
1500ft - Strength, Dexterity, Constitution
1600ft - Intelligence, Wisdom

Well, playing Moria 3.0 on the Amiga, Iwas at 1050 ft when I came across my
first large lavender lepricon (I don't know if this applies to you). Being
a level 26 Paladin I thought I could handle such a beastie, but as it turns out,
my intent to kill the prick was hampered by an intermediate thought of checking
how many WoR scrolls I had left after a number of item's were stolen from my
backpack by the afore mentioned creature.
My inventory revealed that not only was I devoid of a number of spell books
(essential to my survival), I was missing all my wands, all my oil (for the old
lamp), and all my WoR scrolls!

After spending at least half an hour staggerring up to 600 ft my computer
decides to reset itself!!!!!!!

Thank god I use save files! (I swear, only for Lawful means!)

Carl.
