Hi all! I know somebody is going to screw me for this, but what
does the 'Jewel-Encrusted Crown' does for the wearer? (i did scan
thru the manual....they mention Crown of Might, Magi, Lordlness,
Seeing, Regeneration & Beauty, but no Jewel-Encrusted!) Is a
Steel Helm [6,+2] better that the Jewel-Encrusted Crown [0,+1]?

I'am not hunting around lvl 1800ft and I encounter 'L' & 'D',
how do I deal with these???? I just got killed by ONE breath
from the 'D' ...sigh!!! And the 'L'....they just suck me DRY!
Any help appreicated.

Screwing is not necessary. I'm not that hard up.

A Jewel-Encrusted Crown (and Silver and Golden Crowns) are low-end
helmets that don't do much else for you. Your Steel Helm adds 8 to
AC--the Crown only 1.

The reasons Crowns are sought after are that 1) SOME of them turn out to
be the magical crowns you mentioned, and 2) they're worth a LOT when
selling to the shop. Then again, if you're deep enough to find Crowns
you probably don't NEED petty cash...

An Ancient Green or Multi-Hued Dragon, perhaps? Tough darts--there's no
defense against gas weapons. If it's something else, potions of Resist
Heat or Cold and (R), (RA), (RC), (RL), (RF) items help defend against
other breath weapons. An AMHD can kill you outright even with other
breath weapons, so be careful.

Suggested tactic: find him, blast him with whatever distance spell seems
appropriate and T-port away. Rest. Repeat cycle...

As for the Lich--stay away. FAR away. DON'T let him touch you--phase
door or teleport if necessary. Blast him with Fire Bolt if you have a
pressing need to be heroic, but it'll take a LOT of Fire Bolts...

*All* crowns have a description attached to them - they may be
Golden, Silver, and Jewel-encrusted, as far as I know. This is
what everyone can see, without identifying it. If you identify the
crown, and it's still only described as a 'Jewel Encrusted Crown
[0,+1]', then it's just as any piece of armour, though a very bad
one - i.e. it gives you 0+1 armour points. The only thing it's
good for is selling - you ought to get a few thousand GP's for it.

The crowns mentioned in the manual are special crowns. These will
be identified as, e.g., 'A Jewel-Encrusted Crown of Seeing'.

Ancient Dragons (D's) can be nasty, but all of them except the
Ancient Multi-Hued are reasonably easy to kill for a sufficiently
powerful character. You'll probably need some speed, though.

The AMHD (Ancient Multi-Hued Dragon) is the third most powerful
monster in the game. The best way to treat it is to run away from
it, unless you have two items of Speed.

Lichs (L's) alsso come in different types - 'plain' Lichs aren't
too tough to kill (but they can touch to drain experience, so
you'd better keep a Potion of Restore Life Levels handy), while
King Lichs can be nasty and Emperor Lichs are even worse than
AMHD's. Avoid, avoid, avoid (at least at your present level).

One item which I find really handy in dealing with powerful monsters
like AMHD's, Emperor Liches and Evil Iggies is my Staff of Mass
Polymorph - it changes them into (relatively) harmless creatures
such as Young Dragons...

nah, what's fun is to transform a bunch of lice into L's and D's and
such. Then you experiance fun with a staff of mass polymorph.

I actually used to do this armed only with a dagger.

(Of course, it was a +8+8 (SD) dagger, 5 swings, almost guaranteed hit,
but a dagger nonetheless. Had to run from the L's tho and spell them to
death)

there is more madness to my method than method to my madness.

Manual? there is a bonifide manual since 4.83? IF somebody has a complete
manual for 5.2 send it my way. The only thing keeping my characters alive
is millions of trained synapses that have taken the strain of this game since
version 4.8.

The summary says it all,
When I try to read my prayer book it lists blank spaces where the spells
used to be! The prayers still work, but I have to work from memory on what
spells are which!
any suggestions on how to fix this?
P.S. I bought a newe spell book and I can't read that one either!
