Well here it is, a list of how the rating system works, as well as a
list of object depths.

Spoiler follows:

Angband Object Depths (depths in ft)
NB.Where an item can be found at more than one depth, it is purely so the
frequency of those items increases. This may mean, however, that a potion
of speed, for example, may warrant a 'feeling' at low depths. The two
different potions of speed are identical except the depth that they are found
at. This cannot be helped.

RATINGS:

Any object or monster found out of its depth has a rating associated
with it, as well as any treasure pit. The total rating for any level produces
(provided that you have stayed on the previous level for a certain time) a
message such as "You have a good feeling." The following is a summary of the
ratings for objects, monsters and pits:

You get the message "You feel there is something special about this
level." when there is an artifact, a player ghost or (sometimes - see below) a
monster pit.
The other messages are dependant on a total found by adding up all the
values for monsters, objects and treasure pits. They are as follows:

Total rating Message
>100 "You have a superb feeling about this level."
>70 "You have an excellent feeling that your luck is turning..."
>40 "You have a very good feeling."
>30 "You have a good feeling."
>22 "You feel strangely lucky."
>15 "You feel your luck is turning..."
>10 "You like the look of this place."

Ratings for pits:

Diagonal pits, and others of a similar size (7 in total) +5
The large pit with two triangles of traps top and bottom +25
The large alternating wall and hard monster pit +35
The large pit with circular centre +30
The large pit with lots of individual rooms (not symmetrical) +25
Any monster pit if it is not already a special feeling +10

A monster pit is a special feeling if random(dungeon level cubed) is
less than 25000. This means that between 0 and 1500ft, a pit will definitely
be a special feeling. At 2000ft, the chance of it being special are about 1 in
2.5, at 3000ft about 1 in 8.5, at 4000ft about 1 in 20.5, and at 5000ft about
1 in 40.

Ratings for monsters:

For uniques, the rating is (depth found at minus current depth)/2.
For non-uniques, it is the same but for any individual creature, the
rating cannot be above 15.

i was bored and calculated "biff's" signal to noise ratio:

characters excerpted: 21021

signal/noise ratio: 0.005851 (-22 decibels)

i think he may have set a record. :-)

Ob. angband question: what does a staff/wand of the Magi do?
(i havent found one yet, but know they exist)

I read the rating system file but something confuses me. In your
weapons list you mention a longsword appearing at such and such level..

Later on you mention that you can find certain other types of weapons
on other levels...but nothing really about artifacts....but I suppose they
don't really appear at a certain level.

Also, how do you know if something is an artifact or not? I got a pretty
neat weapon from a scroll of aquirement, it is called "a Longsword named
Anguriel (2d5) (+8,+12)". It raises my strength and constitiution and makes
me immune to draining of strength. I wonder if it is artifact quality though
because the rolling damage is the same as a normal longsword (2d5).

With the find of this weapon and my luck in purchasing a longbow of might
I am now going down quicker than I was.... I will continue down until
things start getting hard (I am at 850 ft0).

Any named item is an artifact.
All longswords are 2d5 save for Ringil, which is 4d5.
Quarterstaffs are 1d10
1d10 = 1-10
2d5 = 2-10

Only very few weapons have different damage ranges to their normal
counterparts - Calris and Aule are two examples.

Hope this clears up any confusion 8).

And I wasn't as sarcastic as I could have been either.

I must have a really skewed sample of artifacts, then. :)

Artifacts I have found with my 38th level dunedain priest:

Calris (3d7 bastard sword) *
Rilia (2d4 dagger) *
Totila (2d9 flail) *
Osondir (3d4 halberd)
Careth Asdriag (1d7 saber)
Aeglos (1d20 spear) *

Those marked with a * are different from their normal ranges. So fully
2/3 of the named weapons I've found have had different ranges than normal.
I'm guessing my sample is just skewed? :) (Currently, I'm toting around
Aeglos as my main weapon, and Calris as backup.)

And a question, while I'm at it:

I currently have:
Chain Mail of Arvedui [14,+16]
Gold Dragon Scale Mail [30,+17]
Chaos Dragon Scale Mail [30,+14].

As well as:
Shield of Celefarn [4,+23]
Ring of Flames [+15]
Cloak of Stealth [1,+2] (+3)
A Set of Cestus of Free Action [5,+2]
Boots of Stealth [3,+0] (+2)
Hard Leather Cap of Thranduil [2,+12]

Wearing the DSM's takes my mana down by about 10 (pretty much negligible).
All of my stats (save INT) are at 18/100 naturally. So what am I best-off
wearing? (My personal thought is the CDSM, since it seems to grant disenchant-
ment and confusion resistance.)

I think that any named item may be considered an artifact.

I really need a range weapon myself. I have something named Bloodspike,
Cutlass of Grondicam (sp), and Battleaxe of Balli Stonehand, and I'm still
getting rocked by uniques like Min or Ibun.
