Well I just had a stroke of luck. I was down at 800 feet with a you feel lucky
message. I found a spell book (name forgotten) which had resistance spells,
ranging from resist lightning, acid, etc, which where all low level spells
and low mana cost, to a resist poison 10 mana cost, and a resist (no argument)
which had a 20 mana cost. To top this off I had just killed a Troll and found
a scroll of acquisition. I thought I'd try it out, and I acquired a
quarterstaff named Eriril (sp?), which adds 50 to your intelligence and gave
me about 20 extra mana points. Instead of having to wait ages while I built
up experience to learn the resist spells, I could learn them straight away.
The only bummer is that I only remember them when I am weilding Eriril. When
I change I forget all the spells I learnt through it's bonuses.
Can anyone tell me whether I was exceptionally lucky, or whether this normally
happens at this level?
Well I would also like to know when I can expect more books. How many are
there? Is 5 right?
Thanks,
S.J.Cronin
Well Sandal the mage found at 150 ft (!) a spellbok named Mordenkains
(?) Escapes... little things like Earthquake (sp?), door/stair creation
and...WoR !!
Since my level now (some time later) is high enough I carry one book
instead of the scroll (no slot gained) but I save my money...yesterday
I bought some potions of int and Dex... now I'm 31 lv with 320 Au :-)

- Hi Mom. I know nobody reads manuals and FaQs, but I knew _you_ would. I
worked really hard on this manual, and...Mom...wake up Mom.
WARNING - SPOILERS FOLLOW !
The additional Magic books start appearing as follows -
Resistance of Scarabtaricies ~ 1500ft (Not bad)
Mordenkainen's Escapes ~ 2500ft (Nice for those disapearing acts)
Kelek's Grimoire of Power ~ 3000ft (Great Recharge item III)
Tenser's Transformations ~ 4000ft (A must for those toughies)
Raal's Tome of Destruction ~ 5000ft (I wish I had it)
Btw, Eriril is the Mages' best friend. It hits with Holy Fury against
evil. When it is activated it identifies (SWEET !). I would say finding
this little gem at 800ft is *extremely* lucky.

a Glave of Pain and assorted spells at 2050ft -

And I found a copy at 150ft. I didn't know I was so lucky.

Play a warrior.
I've found all of the special mage books and all but
one of the special priest books, at less than 1500
feet (I know, because my best character so far snuffed
it at 1550. Warriors are HARD at higher levels!). Good
for the gold account, but not much else. I guess that
is a good example of the law of perversity in this game:
If you can't use it, you find it.
If you can use it, you can't find it.
If you really really need it, it ceases to exist.
If you think you're unbeatable, better buy some stock
in the local tombstone factory.

Don't forget:
As soon as you can afford it, the Black Market will cease to stock it.

Really grim, from the sound of that last line. :-)

No kidding!! As a ranger, I've found 2 cleric books above 1300
feet! I sold both... the first was Ethereal Openings I think for
1500 gp or so, no big deal. I don't remember the name of the second
one, but it had the word "GOD" in it and I sold it for 7500 gp, the
maximum in the temple!! So far, the only wizard book I've found is
Resistances... which is pretty boring.
I also found a Ring of Speed at around 900', but it was -1!!!
Typical...
