I beat the Balrog!! After many (too many) hours of Moria, my 31st level
Dwarven priest killed the Balrog. I had all the gear listed below plus a wand
of Acid Balls and a Wand of Frost Bolts.

Its amazing what a little speed can do.

By the way, I also had a Staff of Destruction which was destroyed in the
battle. Would that staff have hurt the Balrog or just made him run away?
Also, the Balrog dropped a Wand of Drain Life when he died. Does this drain my
life or the enemy's life?

When you say level 25, do you mean 1250 ft?
If yes, WOW!! I never find anything of interest, except a few gain stat potions
above 1800 ft !!

Was this instantaneous? or did the game give you a minute or so to enjoy your
new found stature?

Sounds like a good tactic!

Neither one's *that* big a dead once you have the speed to tackle
the Balrog; evil iggys aren't a problem at all though I'd still watch my
step around ELs.

Wait a second here, you guys are discussing how you whacked the Balrog
in your sleep but are tiptoe-ing around the Emperor Lich? I've killed 3 EL's
now around level 1800 and apart from the long battle, never really suffered
much. Just use a fire ball or bolt spell and phase door around to prevent him
from touching you. When you run out of mana teleport away and rest. Go back,
and blast him some more. Eventually he dies. It was fairly easy to avoid having
him touch you and drain your stats.
So am I to beleive that the big B is easier than that?

You have to understand that strategies for the two are completely
different. For ELs and evil iggies, you want to conserve as many of your
big guns (invulnerability, drain life, etc) for the Balrog. For the Balrog,
all the stops are out; you use everything you can since if you have something
left over what good is it going to do you? Under these constraints, ELs can
be pretty nasty customers, especially when you're playing non-mages.

Well, what's the idea for a warrior, then? Is there a way you get
fast enough to fire wands or deal strikes with some +oo, +oo weapon
sufficient to kill the big B eventually??
And even with these constraints (meaning using all I have) my
dwarven warrior finds Emperor Lichs pretty nasty, even with Free
Action.

Even though I played a mage, all of the damage I did to the Balrog was with
a (+11,+11) (+3 str.) katana (HA), admittedly I was using a ring of slaying,
a ring of speed (+1), and boots of speed, as well as Haste Self, and about
eight potions of invulnerability. The Evil Iggy was easy without any save
the sword, boots of speed, and Haste Self, as was the Emperor Lich. AMHD's
are too risky, either they are as easy as the Evil Iggy or Emperor Lich, or
you're doing well one minute, and your dead the next from that viscious gas
breath. My character, being a hafling mage, was subject to other breath
weapons, even with Ribbed Plate Armor (ra), small metal sheild (r), ring of
Lordly protection (fire, cold, and acid) (interchanged as needed). I know
resistance isn't cumulative, but it helps not to lose AC in acid attacks.

I seem to have left a sentence unfinished, the reason the mage was still
vulnerable through all this protection: Max hit points=166. I've had other
characters reach that by level 10. The sword, after all pluses, left me with
+24 to hit, +22 to damage. I didn't miss often.

Given that, it is normally easier to have a few wands of stone to mud.

As the Balrog moves through walls, you move diagonally (so he can't see
you and therefore can't breath on you), he moves next to you, you hit him
(as you are faster), you move again.
You might have trouble with the moving around the corners, that is what
the phase doors are for. If you do phase door, either keep track of your
moves relative to the Balrog, or let him come to you. When you've bashed
him around a bit, quaff all potions of invulnerability and stand there
and bash him. If you try standing there, you may loose items when he
breaths fire, so use them first.
