Ok, I figured out a more precise question.

I just bought the Space Marine Legion pack for SM epic.
I don't have the game or any other references right now,
so I am hoping someone can suggest ideas as to how many
of different figure types to put on stands.

In particular:

* should I make "heavy" stands that have 1 or 2 hvy wpns
figures and 3 or 4 standard (Mk 7 armor) figures? Seems
that will spread the small number of heavy figs out to
give a decent sized unit.

* same question, vis-a-vis "jump pack" units and "terminator"
units. Looks like I have enough "jump" units to mount them
5 to a stand, getting 4 stands from the pack.

* how should I make use of the captains and commanders?

* robots mounted individually?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

By the way, I mentioned before that I got 6 sprues instead
of 5, yielding 20% more minis than the box indicates are
included. Anyone else ever had this happen? This was my
first purchase of anything WH/40K/SM related, so I was
quite pleasantly surprised!

I mounted my six sprues (could it be that the trolls at GW put six sprues in
a box so that the number of mini's would make an even number of
units....Naw, surely not...) in the following way, and got good
economy from the box. I had the game and so had plenty of tactiacl marine
stands. One heavy weapon and 4 Mk & tac marines made a stand of support
troops. This gave me 12 stands of support troops (devastators), enough for
two detachments. I mounted 4 assault marines and one captain for an assault
stand. I was able to produce six assault stands (one detachment). I mounted
each commander with 4 tactical marines for command/personality stands. Six
stands were constructed with four tactical marines and a captain to represent
veterans. The robots and speeders are mounted one per base and bikes are
mounted two per base.hope that this helps.

RNR - Use 1 heavy figure & 4 standard troopers for a heavy stand

RNR - based on what I saw in White Dwarf, I set up my assault and terminator
stands homogeneously - i.e., only terminators or assault troops. However, if
aesthetics aren't that important, or cash is tight, you may want to set them up
according to a less rigid pattern.

RNR - I usually used a command figure in the center of a stand, and then added a
few veteran troopers around it.

RNR - Robots & Dreadnoughts are both mounted individually.

RNR - Overall, you get plastic figures in the Space Marine boxes in
proportionally incorrect amounts. This is due primarily to the fact that the
Space Marine figures were created for the first edition of the game, which used
different army lists. It's a shame they couldn't make new sprues, at least for
the Eldar and Imperial guard, which both really get screwed when it comes to
things like ogryn, commisars, banshees, and dark reapers. Also, I'd like to add
that GW is very sloppy when it comes to describing how to actually use their
figures. In WFB bases sizes are never mentioned, which irritates me to no end.
In Space Marine they now and then tell you what troops you should really use,
but it's rather haphazard.

I don't think there are any official reccomendations, but you can see what
GW does by looking at pictures in White Dwarf, etc.

for heavy stands, 1 heavy weapon marine and 4 regular marines per stand.

* same question, vis-a-vis "jump pack" units and "terminator"
units. Looks like I have enough "jump" units to mount them

5 jump pack marines, or 5 terminators per stand.

* how should I make use of the captains and commanders?

Typically there is one command stand for about 18 regular stands (though
this varies). The command stand can be varied, perhaps 1 commander, a
seargent or 2 and a couple of regular marines. Also you can mix seargents
into your regular stands at random (for color)

* robots mounted individually?

yes

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

sure!

never happened to me ;-)
