Painting is a very personal thing, everyone has their own do's and don'ts.The
undercoating is very important either dark or light depends on the colour to
be.
Metals paint black or dark brown.Dry,letting the paint dry is very important
down in NZ the use of a hairdryer is a must (ie its cold). Then dry brush once
with metal colour, following this highlight high points with neat where light
would naturally be.
Fur /hair.Paint with the colour you desire.Ink wash (inks are a must, thinned
paint will do),with a darker colour inks can and should be mixed with other ink
and paints and thinned with water to a wash.Dry inks need a hairdryer.Dry brush
dry figure with original colour, successive lighter colours may br acheived by
lightening original colour with white or a better effect may be obtained with a
non white lighter clour.
Mixing paints and inks for basic colors is also a must try them out.For a rich
amber/Yellow white undercoat, yellow base(could mix in brown at this stage),ink
wash of yellow/chestnut ,repaint with original colour, then successively lighter
blending.
This is for water based paints. The best way to learn is to paint with someone
in the know!.
Tips.If you can afford it Mike McVees painting guide (Games Workshop) is
excellent.
Ink (GW) and most others give a gloss finish not usually desirable, this can be
avoided in a number of ways.
Certain brands of paint matt the glossy ink eg.Ral Partha blue, red are two that
come to mind.
Matt varnish (aerosol) are very good generally but be careful some brands are
no good try out on older figures first, this also protects well. Two small puffs
to the four sides of the figure is sufficient.
Do not use the paint straight a small ammount of water at least is neccessary
it helps application heaps, also aids mixing.
Hope this helped.
