Howdy Folks,

Well, I hope the holidays have been as nice to you folks as they
have been to me. My wife got me an *extremely* nice digital camera, so
now I don't have to wait for my friend to visit with his digital camera to
get shots of my various minis. Woohoo! With that in mind, I've taken
the new camera for a test drive - and I'm *very* pleased with the initial
results. (Just imagine how good the results will be when I've read the
manual!) I've update my 'Imperial' & 'Tyranids' folders in the Photos
section of the 'rgmw-genbus' (RGMW General Business) Yahoo group.

In the Tyranid folder I've added 2 new shots of my Red 'Spined' Terror.

I've also added 9 new shots in the Imperial folder. They are:

A close up of the Commissar mini I painted a while back.

A pair of shots of the 1st squad of new Cadian IG I just painted recently
along with a close up of the Sgt. mini.

A pair of shots of my first Sentinel - though it isn't finished (still
needs detailing and decals along with a finished base).

And last - a trio of shots of a 'Wrecked Half Track' terrain piece. The
driver is a KIA Jungle fighter hanging out the door of the track. (I've
had like 60 Catachans sitting around for ages and ironically that's the
first one I painted. :)

So if anyone feels like taking a peek - here's the link to the main site.

IIRC - you do have to be a member to view the photos and files section
(pretty much standard with Yahoo groups?) but you can always get a free
Yahoo mail account and use that to join with. Comments, criticism, or
general abuse about my painting or photography skills is welcomed as
always.

Lovely. You is the man. BTW mind giving us some detail on your camera and
techniques in photographing the minis.

Actually, I had to join the group to see the pictures, but at least it was
worth the hassle :-) I especially like the Tyranid pool thingy. Is it some-
thing you bought, or made yourself? If the latter, could you explain a bit
how it was done? Does it have any game value or is it just a nice bit of
scenery?
The Silver Skulls are also a really nice paint job, IMO.

Thanks for the pics,

Thomas

Sure - not a problem. My insanely nice wife got me a Nikon 'Coolpix
5700' camera. It's got a compactflash memory card and has 5 megapixel
capcity. As for the shots themselves. While I'm not a digital photo
expert by any means - indirect lighting tends to work the best when taking
pics of miniatures. (Direct flash invariably washes out the color and
detail on minis.) So, I left it on Autofocus, set it for short range
photos, and disabled the flash. The basement has florescent lights and
the ceiling is (fortunately) covered in white sound-proofing tile. I have
a pair of halogen floor lamps I use to light my work area while I'm
painting, so I simply moved those over by the gaming table and let their
light reflect off white ceiling tiles as well to get enough indirect
lighting. This warm blue-white lighting produced pretty good color
likeness in the pictures and retained the detail as well. I also set the
camera up on a tripod I've got for my regular 35mm camera so as not to
jiggle the camera while taking the shots. I've got to look into a good
photography light stand so I can get those 'natural light' high intensity
blue-white bulbs. They let on see colors more naturally when painting or
taking photos indoors and I definitely could use that down in the basement
where I work. I've got some natural light down there, but not a lot.

The camera was set in jpeg format (it'll do Jpeg, tiff, and Raw mode) and
creates shots that are 72 dpi - and freaking huge in number of sqaure
inches. I just use photoshop to increase the dpi while reducing the area
which results in great detail while generally reducing the file size. The
pic files are typically 1 meg in size from the camera (and I think it's
got a high-rez option that will capture even more detail - yikes!)

I'll have to sit down and plow through the manual, as well as do some
experimentation. They do make add-on lenses for this model, and I'm not
sure if they make any special macro-zoom lenses, so I'll have to check on
that. About the only draw back I've noticed is the shallow depth of field
when it's set for close up shots. I'm not sure if I can simply increase
resolution, and back off the range slightly to get good detail still while
increasing the depth of field. I'll have to experiement with it as I have
more time.

Thanks for the comments and hope that helps,

Myrmidon

much you are going to have to make per year in order to play.

Thanks. :)

Thanks, I did make that. It's a base of thick plastic (like 4mm), the
wall of the pool is styrofoam shaped with a hot wire tool, and then coated
with gesso (an acrylic sealer - it's basically acrylic paint without the
pigment in it). I painted the pool wall and then glued it to the base
using a gool helping of hot glue from a glue gun (goal is to seal the
inside edge of the pool so that the 'water' won't leak out when it's
poured into the pool). I painted the inside of the pool to give the
illusion of depth and water ripples and then added the painted ripper and
poured the water using Woodland Scenics "realistic water" product which is
the best stuff I've used to date for creating water effects. You can
order directly off of Woodland Scenics web site if you can't find it near
where you live. (If you do an advanced google groups search of RGMW on
the terms 'realistic water' - you should find an article I wrote a while
back as a review of the product. If you can't find it and are interested,
let me know and I'll see if I can dig it up and repost it for you.)

> Does it have any game value or is it just a nice bit of

Mainly we've used it as sort of impassable scenery where models have
to move around it, but it doesn't block LOS. However during my Imperial
vs Tyranids campaign I'm hoping to run this summer with my son (assuming I
get some more IG and Marines painted) I'm going to use it as a sort of
'ripper spawning pool' that will produce ripper swarm bases until the pool
is destroyed. I'm considering having the spore chimneys spew random spore
mines too. The terrain will have various points costs (like imperial
defenses) or come as a bounus for winning scenarios during the campaign.

> The Silver Skulls are also a really nice paint job, IMO.

Thanks, I like them too. My regular opponent, Toaster*, gives me a
hard time about them because they're a 'quick & dirty' type of paint job -
black undercoat, drybrush with Tamiya Gun Metal Grey (X-10) and then do a
lighter drybrushing with any sort of bright silver paint, add details, and
you're done. (* Of course this is the guy who bought much of his Space
Wolves army pre-painted. He can and does paint well, but I think it's
funny he's giving me a hard time about 'quick paint jobs'. :)
I'm doing the rest of my marine figures in various chapter colors as
a 'Crusade Army' since I really didn't want to paint that many marines all
in the same color scheme. I'm doing some in "Omega Marines" (Ultra's
spin-off) in Blue, Gold, & Copper, as well as "Imperial Fangs" in a
Orange, White, and Black Tiger stripe camo pattern, and a bunch of "Legion
of the Damned" minis as well.

Glad they were worth the effort to take a peek at.

I'm about to start work on my first proper gaming table now that I'm
moving and I have to do me a wrecked truck, now!

Is that scratchbuilt or part of a kit?

I'm gonna have to get some pics of my IG force at some time, because
it's starting to look great, but all I've got in the way of pictorial
production devices is a little Olympus Trip - hardly good enough.

The Halftrack itself is an old WW II U.S. Half-track kit. I can't
recall if it's an old Monogram or Revell kit - I first put it together
something like 25 years ago (which is why it wasn't assembled all that
great. :) I just found it a while back in a box of old model kits when I
was moving, and decided to repaint it and use it for a terrain piece. You
should be able to find something comperable at any hobby shop that carries
military model kits. I've got some old WW II US infantry models that I've
painted up like bronze statues (armed with IG las rifles) to use with my
Imperial terrain as well.

Yeah, I do know the frustration of wanting to take good pics and not
having access to the right tools for the job. If you do get some shots -
be sure and put them up on the Gen-bus yahoo group, we'd love to see them.

UH...It's Revell-Monogram and has been for a number of years now...In any
case I don't remember Revel or monogram making a halftrack, but there
used to be a company called Renwal that made one, I think the merged with
MPC sometime back...

In any case here is a half-track in 1/32 scale
