I was reading Fine Scale Modeler and saw and article on the M113 and
instantly thought "rhino"! Wondering if anyone else has spotted
similar 'real world' vehicles and thier 40K counterparts. The M2/M3
Bradley reads like a Razor back holding 6 troops, but doesn't much
look like one.

and looks like THQ and GW made a rhino out of a FV432 APC.

Isn't it interesting how flat out retarded it looks in a field. Like it was
designed by Volvo.

yeah, the Leman Russ is thematically a KV-1, even though it borrows
aesthetically more from the Churchill and the A33 + WWI-era sponsons.
Similarly, the Chimera is a BMP (1 and/or 3, whichever). The Basilisk is a
Hummel, etc. etc.

The original Rhino was basically a tongue-in-cheek M113 clone, but the later
generations and the variants incorporate elements borrowed more from modern
armoured cars (MOWAG/Stingray turrets etc.) than from any equivalent tracked
vehicles. The obvious exception is the Land Raider, which is another WWI
PzKpfW on steroids.

Ok pretty neat. Made me bid 13 bucks on an Tamiya M113 on ebay. :)
And I want to find a photo-etch detail kit and tack it onto my rhino.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Armored_cavalry_assault_vehicle.jpg
looks like a great starting point for a looted Ork vehicle. It's sort
of interesting how many countries use wheels intead of tracks for
their APCs. I was surprised that the M113 isn't scheduled to be
replaced till 2018. I was never a tread head growing up so all this is
quite new and exciting to me.

I always thought in the LR as the WWII french Char-B, mainly because
of the main hull gun.

Yeah looks a lot like a russ to me too. So I read the KV-1 wiki and
it didn't scream Russ to me. Or do you mean it's operational role? The
more I look at real tanks the more silly the "human cannonball" gun
barrels seem. But 40K has always had 1 foot deep into fantasy.

Way easier to maintain, better fuel efficiency, lower ground pressure, less
vulnerable to mines etc. The preference does depend a lot on the native
terrain; ultimately tracked vehicles can still go places wheeled ones can't.
The general NATO preference for armoured cars and wheeled APCs, for example,
on was influenced a lot by the terrain of the north German plains over which
they were expected to fight in the 60s and 70s.

They keep extending it in the US. There are other countries where M113s
will probably STILL be serving like 50, 60 years from now.

The U.K. equivalent of the M113, the FV432, became obsolescent when
the Warrior IFV was introduced, and many were sold off. Two were
actually "Cut-and-Shut" (just like a "Chop Shop" job on stolen cars)
to make a stretch Limo.... But when the Warriors began to wear out
because of the pace of operations in Iraq, the surviving FV432s were
re-worked and re-branded as the "Bulldog".

IIRC, after the NATO air campaign in Kosovo a decade ago, only 13
actual "tank" wrecks were found: One was a modern T-72 equivalent, two
were obsolescent T-55s. The other ten were US-built WW2 era M36 Tank
Destroyers. (The official position was all the other destroyed
vehicles had been removed - presumably along those lines of
communication we had so effectivly interdicted...)

Land Raiders and leman Russ were inspired by the MK1 and MKV , The one in
Ranters link was considered a "Male" because it mounted cannons in the
sponsons, there was also a "Female" variant that had machine guns. The
Chimera (and its variants) is almost a direct copy of a Russian BMP.

For some reason I was remembering the BMP as a wheeled vehicle.
Yeah, spot on.

I eagerly await my M113 and see what kind of conversion fun I can have
with it. Ebay 8 bucks.

Ranter how about you shower, put on a clean shirt, and take yourself off to
a bar and try and meet a female Ranter.
